The report of Superintendent Farley
containing a statement of the gross re--eipts
of the Cascade portage for the.
fiost month, will sufficiently answer the
many criticisms offered on the rates
.fixed by the commission, without any
knowledge of the facts iu the case. Had
they been fixed lower they would not
ttave uieet the current expenses. To
, mate any reduction from present rates
- reduction must he made in the opera
ting expenses. This is the course re
com mended' by the superintendent and
-adopted by the board. The office of the
superintendent will be merged into that
of manager who will have entire control.
Mr. Farley's work will be done about
tbeend of the month and be will re
tscgn. The. reduction in the running ex
penses recommended by the superinten
lcut amounts to between three to four
tatndrcd dollars a month. The com
nuisaiamrs were very anxious to accede
e the suggestions of Mr. Farley nnd the
lirsctorsrf the peoples' boats, and every
xaeait ol iroductiou possible will be given
in m corresponding reduction of rates.
We may add that the directors of the
jxwples' boats accompanied superinten
VSent "Farley to Salem and there was
nothing l.mt the utmost, harmony be
tween all parties. The directors feel
that they cannot speak too highly of the
consideration shown them by the board
portage commissioners.
The East Oregonian is opposed to the
