.Johnny Kirk and His Dog Pelker.
Judge Thornbury tells a good story
about a character they have up in Grant
named Johnnv Kirk." Johnnv is an
little old dried, up southerner, nearly
blind: with' a pronounced Iibd. fall of
egotism and possessed of the idea that
tie is one of the finest hunters in the
world. No hunting -expedition is. com
plete without Johnny and he never tires
telling what "we" shot notwithstanding
a
the fuct that he could not see a- barn on
fire. Johnny went out some years ago
wkh a hunting party and as he was fit
for little else they placed him in charee
of a dog named Pelker, charging him
strictly not to let Felker loose. To keep
his charge the", more securely Johnny
tied the dog by a small rope to a hind
brace button of his pants. All went
nicely till a big buck crossed the path
of Johnny and Pelker when the dog
made a plunge after the deer which
threw Johnny off his feet and pulled the
pants clean off him. Aa Johnny had no
drawers and the ground was covered
with snow, when he realized his condi
tion he began calling'Come back Pelker,
you son of a gun or I'll shoot you."" . But
tho dog heeded him not. Johnny made
his way back to camp w here he busied
himself trying to keep warm the best he
could till Pelker returned from his hunt
in the evening.

i A man seldom prospers in the world
