Macallister and her-mother Mrs. Peasley left last night to join Mr. Macallister at Portland where they in tend to remain during the . coming winter. --:- Don't forget the band boys' ball to night. All not provided with tickets on procure thein from btacey shown at tie entrance ; to tne ' ball room. " Ike Fterry has fitted up a nice cloak room and will attend, "to the checks.' Mr. O. N. Depew, formerly in the em- gloy of filet arland & French and lately, rith Mr. J. C. Baldwin, left with his family this morning for Portland, where , , they intend "to reside in the future. The 'Chbonicle is sorry to .'see .Mr. Depew ! lexve The Dalles where he has many imxai friends who will always be glad . tto hear of his wellfare." ' - The band boys will not soon forget the ' jgenerosity of Mr. Frank, the milkman, sfrom over, the river, who generously bought three tickets for the ball tonight. Jar. Frank's milk will taste all the bet ter for it and jf any body, in the future, ; ever hints that he extracts, any of the ' Satetcal fluid from .. the' pump he had better not doit in the presence of a ' Dalles band-twy.- " r. ' A man named Benjamin S. Yjeger, sfaot himself - in. East Portland last Wed nesday nighd "Vseger is a German about . -wO years of &ge. -. He deliberately placed the muzzle of rusty 44-caliber British fenll-dog pistol in his mouth and fired it - offi. He died, immediately. He is said to have been at one time an extensive contractor in Austin, Texas.' It is sup posed that his mental depression was due to the recent death of his wife. , Joe Burger's team ran away about the ; noon .hour today." While driving south im Washington . street the reach pole .ofUis wagon became uncoupled and the fapcees started pn, a dead run for home ringing the two' frcnt wheels after them, to the imminent peril of pedestrians and mbuggy or two that were on the street. They passed the Joles residence safely d were overhauled somewhere on the bluff without any material damage to anpthing. A call at The Dalles Cigar factory to day found TJlrich" & Sons as busy as nailers. In answer to the question, "How is business?" Mr. TJlrich said, "We have all the business we can at tend to. The merchants of-The Dalles patronize liberally and we have not a thing to complain of." The secret of the firm's success, we have no. doubt, lies in the fact that they use nothing but the best stock the market affords. A letter was shown the Chronicle corres pondent from a large Chicago house with which TJlrich & Sons deal largely, which said: "We have nothing better than the stock we ship you. It is the very best the market - aflords and our finest quality of burning stock." A Chronicle Reporter Slakes a Find. The other day as a Chronicle reporter was going his daily rounds with his hat pulled down over his eyes, trying to think of something that would make an item that would create a sensation and furnish an interesting topic for gos sipers, a little piece of paper lying in a mud puddle caught his eye, and seeing the name of one of our most estimable yonng ladies thereon, he roWed up his pantaloons and waded out. On picking up the aforesaid paper he found it to be a letter which read as follows : , Wash., Aug. 26, '91. Mhs , Tlie Dalles, Oregon: Friend : Were you ever taken for a flock of geese? I was, this morning. At daybreak I went to the river and went in swimming. A Dutchman came along with a shotgun. He saw some thing moving in the water. Geese! Bang ! Duck ! I was the flock of geese, and came very near having to don my angel plumage and climbing the golden stair. Take warning from me. Never go in swimming when there .is a wild eyed Dutchman around with a double barreled shotgun. Truly yours, From the above it would seem that the fellow who wrote the letter was afraid a false report that he was killed or seriously wounded might reach the Uiihonicle through the dispatches and fearing that such might be the cause of procuring her a room in the state insane asylum, accordingly wrote her this short letter which no doubt lifted a great load off her mind. A Miserably Bad Road. Complaints are constantly .reaching this office from farmers south of The Dalles, about the condition of the road leading to this city.' As the last word of the above sentence was written our old friend Tom Ryan entered our sanc tum with his face covered with blood and wounds, and swelled almost beyond recognition; ' He had fallen from his wagon while coming into town with a load of grain.-. It is the'same old story. One wheel tried to explore the fathom less depths of one of the innumerable chuck holes and Tom fell off. It's a wonder the old man didn't break his neck. A short time ago Henry Simons of Kight-Mille had a load of hay capsize from the same 'cause. : He lived to tell the Chronicle man but his salvation was a miracle. It appears somebody must first slaughter himself on the altar of his county before the necessary re pairs will be made. Who will be the victim? The Dog Ordinance Will Ite Enforced. The marshal will certainly enforce the dog ordinance, commencing next Monday.-; A dog pound has been impro vised in the yard of the old court house and the cur that is . unfortunate enough to get into it will cost its owner $1.50 to get him out, and then the said owner will have to get a dog license to boot, or kill the dog. v It is only fair to add that the council and not the police force is re sponsible for the enforcement of the dog and cow ordinances. The council lately passed an ordinance whereby the city gets all fines for impoundment, and not the officers. The latter will, in the fu ture, simply get their monthly pay, whether they take up one dog or a thou sand : - but look -out for your dog, for neither the marshal," nor 1 his assistant would know a "sooner,' dog from a thor oughbred when it comes to putting him in the pound. :' '' , .7 ;.-.'. ; - .Advertised ' Letters. vThe following is' the list of letters re maining in The Dalles postoffice uncalled for Saturday, Oct. 10, 1891. They can be found at this office. tf They Mast Be Supported. ' A writer" in the Goldendale Sentinel, who Bigris himself "Farmer" adminis ters a stinging rebuke to some grangers and members of the alliance of Klickitat county who last year made so much ado about the . high rates charged by the Union ; Pacific-' company, "crying for boats on the river and promising they would ' do this . and that if only boats were put on," and yet haul their grain to Grants, where it must be transferred to the . company they they formerly so much detested. The writer goes on to urge the farmers and merchants of Klickitat county to even sacrifice something, if necessary, so as to maintain the new line of boats, lest they should, for lack of support, be compelled to withdraw and thus leave the people again at the mercy of the railroad company. This is exactly the way to look at the matter. The boats must be supported at all costs. They were built for the peoples' benefit ' and the people must maintain. Every man who buys a pound of sugar or a sack of salt in The Dalles today saves money through the fact that the Regulator is in existence. In point of fact the boat is receiving! very flattering encourage ment. She has had more freight than could be transferred at the portage by the little government engine that the management. of the portage could hardly ever get when they wanted it, and when they did have the use of it would pull next to nothing. .The patrons of the new line have bourne this inconvenience with considerable patience and it is hoped that all further inconvenience and delay will be ended by next Mon day by the furthest.
