The Dalles Daily ChFoniele. TUESDAY;- - - - - JAN. 6, 1891 LOCAL BREVITIES. Mr. Varney reports etrawberriea in bloesom, a sufficient evidence of Oregon's equable climate. , We noticed a big load of sole leather being taken to the North Dalles shoe factory this morning. Mr. F. H. Stanton and Mr. Ax. Rahm of Hood River were in the city yesterday. We acknowledge a pleasant call. The Board of Trade will meet to-night lit their rooms in Vogt block. A full (attendance is . desired as business of . importance is to be transacted. We have placed a bulletin board in our corner window, and will hereafter give a brief statement of important dis patches as they arrive. Nine carloads of cattle from Payette, Idaho, were fed at the stock-yards last night and shipped to Troutdale this morning. ' ' If you want to get the very latest news " subscribe for the Chronicle, and at the same time recollect that it is the best advertising medium in Eastern Oregon. Hon. Henry Blackman of Heppner ar rived here last night ' and left by this morning's passenger for Portland. Mr, Blackman is one of the few democrats in the state senate, and having no polit ical axes to grind will no doubt prove a valuable member, as he is bright, quick to catch a point, and energetic in back jng up anything he undertakes. The week of prayer promises to be well attended by the good people of The Dalles and it is anticipated that the in terest will become more and more mani fest as the week goes on. The topic at the Congregational church for this evening is "Prayer for individual loyalty to Christ." First, "Personal care," John xx,' 15-17 ; second Corinthians v, 13-21. Second, "Willingness to serve," Phil, in, 7-14. The warm weather which has to a great extent prevailed all winter cul minated Monday in a warm sunshiny " spring-like day. It was beautiful but dangerous. We hope to see the ther mometer get down in the twenties and stay there, as this will be necessary if we are to have a fruit crop. Another week or two of warm weather would be ruinous to the fruit industries, as even " now the buds are swelling. Some wretch with no fear of the law, and no regard for the rights of others, last night helped himself to a set of ingle buggy harness belonging to Mr. Jud Fish. The thief emptied a sack filled with pitch kindling wood, and evidently , . utxsd the sack to carry off the harness in. f . The same fellow probably, stole two f ""' collars from a teamster at Books & Beers, I and got away with a whip from, someone else. From indications the fellow will have a horse before long, so it is well ' enough to lock the stable doors now. In growing the best of everything the farmer lifts himself above the competi tion that now oppresses him. It is often said in the professions that there is room u -at the top, and this rule holds good in farming as it does in nearly every em ploymet. Instead of getting out of farming, condemning the business as necessarily unprofitable,, a more just conclusion would be that the best farm ing like the best of everything else, must always pay, and the effort should then be to learn how this may be attained.. " Jackson Engine Company will give ' a grand masquerade ball at Gymnasium hall Friday evening January 16th. Par ticular pains will be taken to prevent persons of questionable character being admitted, and those who take part in the masking can rest assured that they will meet no one but ladies and gentle men. Old Jackson Engine company deserves well of our people and should be given such a rousing attendance as to make the boys feel that we appreciate them. Tickets are now on sale and every property owner should patronize the boys and help to keep the company on a solid financial basis. The west bound Fast Mail distin guished itself this morning by giving birth to a bouncing girl baby, or rather a woman on the Fast Mail did so. Con ductor Coleman was in charge of the 1 , train and received an intimation of what i. was about to happen after the train left Umatilla. A physician on the train was summoned, several kind ladies volun teered their services and the young lady was ushered into the world as the train rushed along the bank of the Columbia at the rate of twenty-five miles an hour. We suggest that according to the eternal fitness of things she should be named -Columbia. Thus again is the wonderful productiveness of Oregon exemplified, and the climate given another boom. . Misfortunes never come' singly, but they seem to have come with unusual y. severity on MrFred Rawlins formerly . train dispatcher here. Just after his resignation, his " wife dislocated her ankle, and all three of his bright little children were taken down with scarlet fever. Kitty died, " and, owing to the contagious nature of the disease was fol lowed to the cemetery by her bereaved jTarents alone. Zaida and Mellis rallied , . and were thought out of danger, but ' this morning the sad news reached us that Mellis, the little boy is dead. Mr, and Mrs. Rawlins have a host of friends , . ' here who sympathize deeply with them in their sad bereavement. Mr. 1m E.' Crowe went down to Hood River this morning and will return to morrow. K- . Robert Kelley, of Kingsley, is in the city. He reports everything lovely in his locality. Look out for petty thieves. Three sets of harness have been stolen in the last week, in the city. Mr. L. E. Crowe went to Hood River this morning to attend a meeting of the Hood River Townsite company, of which he is president. Mr. Lowe, the engineer in charge of the city water- works, has arrived and will superintend the construction of the work as it progresses. - " Dr. William Lee, of High Prairie, who is an excellent yeterinary surgeon, re turned home this morning from Pendle ton where he was called to attend to a valuable horse. Mr, Irwin, of Idaho, stopped off at the stock yards Tuesday with 300 head of beef cattle, to rest and feed them. They go to the American Cold Storage Meat Packing Co. of Portland. Charley Richmonds team became frightened while waiting ior a train the other night and started so run away. they only got across the street, when they collided with a big lamp post that anchored them. No damage except breaking one of the irons on the end of the tongue, to which the breast straps are fastened. The sneak thief referred to elsewhere in this issue, ' has been getting in his work in good shape and is evidently de sirous of starting a livery stable. Sun day night he, or some one else, stole a set of harness from Mr. Wakefield, another from George Miller and another from H. C. Neilsen. He also took an overcoat from Miller's place. A letter to McFarland & French from John Days says, "The weather has been unusually warm, but no rain and no grass on the range. Feed is plenty in the shape of hay, and stock doing well except sheep, which are falling off badly as they do not seem to do well on any kind of hay raised there except alfalfa." The weather at the time of writing, Jan uary 1st, was threatening, and no doubt, the last storm visited them. The writer thinks that section will have quite a boom in silver mining soon, as there is an abundance of low grade ore. A "Ohoat , Dancer, Here." , An Indian reported yesterday that Sunday an Indian arrived on the train from Dakota, that he had been wounded severly, and showed the Indians here his wounds, claiming to have been killed and brought to life again by the Indian Messiah ; that he has aroused considerable excitement among the Indians here, who are dancing, and that he 13 trying to instil the Messiah craze into them and get them to go to war with the whites. It is not probable the fellow, if he is here, could induce the Indians to take any stock in his statements, but a few such runners scattered ' among the Shoshones and Piutes south of us might cause serious trouble. ' From Sarah Winnemucca's statement, just such messengers have been sent among her people, and it may be possible that the story told by the Indian here is substantially true. Potato Penwipers. some genius has lound out that a potato makes a very good penwiper, When you have finished writing, in stead of laying down your pen to be cor roded by the ink which remains in it, just stick it into a potato, and the next time you want to use it you will find it bright and clean.
