Judging from the problem Attorney
General Daug-herty and the dry aceota
are up asaioet now, ft would eeem the
better part of "valor to , hare taken
Santa into partnership. would : be
cheaper and .easier for. "them to bave
worked with mm than against bun.
Making the idea somewhat clearer-
there ; existed la them pre-Volstead
days, ' now gone forever, a friendly
little menagerie of pet animals, such
as the green monkey, the pink tiger
and " the playful yellow polka-dot
snakes. ' - :
Prohibition has 'added to this col
lection a , large white elephant, sole
property of . the dry enforcement
agents. - , - . " -j
Making the idea still clearer, reports
To Attorney General Daugherty . from
Ltntted States marshals throughout tbe
country, indicate that the storage costs
on ; the seised liquors, automobiles,
boat and other vessels taken Into cus
tody by the marshals , in- the enforce
ment of the prohibition law, have'be-
oome serious problem, not .only in
the amounts of the bills, but in ; the
final proper disposition of the com
modities themselves.";' '':r'
' This white elephant Is an expensive
creature costing nearly $150,000,000
year..-It is costing ; few York offi

are paying J11.Z0O annuallyt for sin

ly bill for the most thickly populated
districts. Southern New Vork, Eastern
Pennsylvania. " Massachusetts and
Northern Illinois, is 411,200. The re
maining S9 districts pay only fit IS a
month altogether.
Another characteristic of this white
elephant is disclosed in that official
ly ' the ownership- of the goods seized
cannot be established and in such cases
the courts' refuse to act, so that vth
articles seem destined to remain in
storage at government expense indefl
Eitely.
But- the attorney general expects, to
have a solution ready before long.
The Eastern Pennsylvania district has
set the pace, according- to the depart
ment of justice, by selling everything
jpoesible as soon as possible,-Including

Wheat Shipped Prom
Haines Dunne Wee.
Valued at S17,726
Haines. Dec 5,Ixcal shipments of
wheat last week by the Oregon Co
operative Grain Growers association
totaled is,ss? Dusneis. vaiuea at i7.7z.
The grain was consigned to. Portland.
The estimated quantity of wheat
stored in Haines warehouses this sea
son is approximately 50,000 bushels,
80 per cent of Which is said to be
controlled by the association. Both
grain and bay shipments, which have
been held up on account of the car
shortage, are being made as cars are
more easily obtained.
Hay shipments during the last 10
days have been about 60 cars of high
grade timothy, v which is bringing to
the growers IIS a ton on the car. Hay
in storage at Haines during the season
is estimated at 8900 tons.
Window Smashing
Klamath f Motorists
Popular: Diversion
Klamath Falls, Dec 25. Smashing
plate-glass windows has become such a
noDUlar aiversion wiin nroiorau in tnts
eitv that ways and means for obtaining
a closed season are oeing . conweerea
by merchants.
One merchant already has asked the
city council for permission to protect
his store witn a strong iron railing
along the sidewalk. It has been pro
posed that a different method of park
ing cars be adopted, since the present
system of backing cars into the curb
is disastrous when some careless mo
torists use the reverse gear by mistake.
Windows of a confectionery store, a
restaurant, a pool' hall and a grocery
have been broken this season. A hard
ware store Kolds the record, with two
windows broken. --
