Walter Doxsie of troop No. 13, and Douglas Fox, of troop No. 15, took the stage and put on tumbling and acrobatic stunts that broaght - applause that rocked the building and that was pronounced not far below the work of professionals. RALLY IS PEPPY The rally waa a rousing affair. A distinctly entertaining program fea - lured .Scout songs, yells, movies and ' various other exercises! Special nura--' hers were contributed by Albert Wei sendanger, . who played a mouthharp, and by a Quartet composed of L. W. - Ross, scoutmaster of troop No. 69, and W. R. Patterson, Boyd Williams and Carroll Morrison. Scout Executive Brockway presided. Assistant Scout Executive J. A. C. Oaks led the sing- ing and Mrs. Brockway played the ac- companiments. , - - Thlrten boys were moved from the tenderfoot ranks to the grade of, sec- ' ::- end class Scouts and five second class s Scouts graduated into the first class ranks. Fifteen first class Scouts were awarded merit badges for completion of courses in numerous difficult sub- - jects. Smoking in bed is held responsible tor the death of Abraham Selback. 33, a logger, who waa suffocated by the fumes from his burning bed in the Scandia hotel here Friday. Christian, the - president's secretary, replying to a, telegram from Mayor Baker asking for support of congressional relief measures. Ths let ter says : "Please let ,me acknowledge ths re ceipt of your telegram of December 15 and say that the president has di rected the war department to dispatch army officers to Astoria to make to him an official appraisal of the situa tion, "As soon as he has received that report he will be- glad to give expres sion in suitable form to ths measures already proposed In congress for the relief of that community. He asks me to convey to you an expression of his very deep regret at ths misfortune which has befallen the city of Astoria. ' Salvation Army Is Behind in Funds;' Many Need Baskets When Christmas shoppers hear ths jingling of the Salvation Army bells. In the down-town streets these days there are pictures of cold homes - and hungry families that the thoughtful will conjure up. The army headquarters reported Fri day that it is 8900- behind in collec tions what it was last year on this ' date. And there are ,880 baskets of Christmas good things to be sent out by the army feeding 1700 needy peo ple. Unless kindness loosens ths purse strings, some of these people will have to go hungry. The kettles and chim neys, in the doorways and on the cor ners are receptacles ' for stray coins.
