STEAMERS REACH
LOCAL WHARVES
v" .With" the "partial lifting of heavy
fog which have t enveloped the Co
lumbia and Willamette rivers for four
days, five ocean carriers succeeded in
reaching Portland. Thursday afternoon,
mhlle today will bring the arrival of
an additional number of vessels, which
have- been delayed at lower river
points.
- Rain- "was" reported' today at North
Head and rtyer point-and It was ex
pected that , the"' fogs ' would be suf
ficiently ; dispelled to permit usual
movements ' hr the daytime.
Ice conditions in the Columbia river
are reported to be Improved.' although
up-river boat traffic will remain tied
up untlf;next week, even under fav
orable conditions. Lower river trifle
continues as usual, with' delays in
schedules due as much to fog as to
lee, while log towing, which was re-
. sumed by the Shaver Transportation
company Wednesday, is reported to be
continuing, although movements ,are
, slow.

i tiled to sail this afternoon for Japan.
China and Manila.
' . Her cargo was composed chiefly of
lumber, wheat and flour. Uer manifest-showed
1.89.319 feet of lumber.
16.41 barrels of flour, 80,000 bushels of
wheat, 163 tons of newsprint, 23 tons
of old newspapers, 11.000 pounds of
potatoes and.45 tons of general cargo,
including machinery, medical and
toilet preparations, and two corpses.

steamer Tayol Maru, 2417 tons, ar
rived in the -Columbia river this morn
ing, and was scheduled to proceed to
Portland for lining in preparation for
taking on - cargo. The " vessel, under
charter to the Northern Grain & Ware
house company, for a voyage to the
United Kingdom, will load at the
North Bank: dock. The steamer is the
second grain carrier fof the United
Kingdom to arrive recently from Jap
an. She sailed' from Kobe; November
23, just a . day behind the Scotland
Maru.-now loading at the Irving dock

HARRT L. HUDS03T OFFERED
POST WITH SEATTLE PORT
Seattle port officials have approached
Harry L. Hudson, general manager of
the Joint traffic bureau of the Port of
Portland and the commission of pub
lic docks, relative to willing the office
of traffic expert of ' the Seattle port
commission, which will be- established
in the near future, it became known
here today.
Because: present contracts with the
Port of Portland bind Hudson here
until" April. .1923. he notified the Seattle-
authorities that he could not con
sider any offer which would involve
a transfer before that time.
It is understood the Seattle office,
which will soon be established, will
offer a salary of $12,000 to $15,000.

'PORTLAND HAVE CELEBRATION
Christmas was celebrated this after
noon Jay 30 members ' of the Port of
Portland's office staff, who gathered
around a 'decorated tree in the com
missioners' room at the general of
fices. Santa Claus displayed a spirit
of humor In passing out presents, for
each person received a novelty gift of
a humorous nature to' remember the
occasion by or to furnish a take-off
on his respective personal oddities
or habits. Marine department repre
sentatives of various Portland .news-
papers were accorded a hearty wel
come. Luncheon was served the
guests.
All along the waterfront
The Latin American liner Baja Cal
ifornia, inbound from Puget sound, ar
rived in Portland this morning from
down river points and moved to Mu
nicipal Terminal No. 1. She will load
500 tons of flour in Portland for Mex
ico and Central America.
Two intercoastal liners in the American-Hawaiian
fleet moved upstream
in the river today, the Oregon ian
berthing about noon at Municipal
Terminal No. 1. The Kentuckian was
reported on her way up the river early
this afternoon. Both are bringing con
signments 'of general' cargo from At
lantic ports. '.
After spending several days in try
ing to reach Portland in the fog.'-' the
oil tanker Richmond arrived today at
Willbridge " and . discharged oil. She
departed today in ballast for San
Francisco.
