By Hyman H. Oohen
The : advance of 20o per barrel in all
grades of local flour, including patent.- bakers
and soft wheat grades, effective at the opening
of tha Tuesday trade, was no surprise, because
such action had bees generally expected, in
fact forecast in these eohunns.
There was a complete change of base in
the wheat market Tuesday morning. Liver
pool advanced at the opening for options
while Chicago was weaker and lower. The
seesawing in the big markets keeps the gen
eral trade very much mystified. la fact the
market of l&te has been more of a scalpers
affair than showing any decided ehange.
Xiocal trading - is spotted. Here and there
some of the mills with export flour orders
are bidding he new high level for Western
white or white club at $1.25 91.27 per
bushel, basis tide water delivery,' bat there is
no general activity indicated. In fact there
is some question as to what nse each wheat
can : be put as neither present or former flour
or wheat export sales Justify them.
There is no dodging the Issue. The export
floor market is doll with only spasmodic sales
confirmed. The price available is usually
fractionally below that already .quoted, there
fore the present advance in patent was forced
owing to the inability to secure the price
of straights and cutoff for export. Consider
ing the price of wheat, the export, should be
higher snd the patent not so high.
Millstuffa show a strong tone, but there
is practically no change ha the prices , Mill
feeds and hay show a similar position.

Decline of Cent
In Early Wheat ;
Trade at Chicago
Chicago, Dec 19.- Wheat had a setback
at the start today but good support was nnr
corered after s decline of a cent The bear
ish government report on the new crop late
yesterday, coming after a bearish final re
port on did crop yields on Friday, impressed
some of the pit longs with the idea that they
had been misled recently regarding eupp3ee
and they wanted to dispose of their lines be
fore a crash. This pressure caused a rapid
decline but on the dip the trig longs picked
up the offerings snd enough short covering
developed to cause a little rally. Little
change in cash wheat premium was noted at
Chicago, Minneapolis and Winnipeg. Export
trade was qinet but there were reports of Eng
lish bids ip the market not far below a work
ing basis. The Greek order was reported
filled in Argentine. Foreign advices negarding
finances are mixed and there was a decline in
sterling and German marks. Bales of 50,000
bushels of contract wheat were made to go
to store.
Corn followed the trend of wheat. The early
decline in wheat induced liquidation at the
start. The break uncovered supporting orders.
Receipts continue of good volume, cash com
premiums were unchanged to He lower. ' ship
ping demand la slow. Germany is reported to
have bought corn at the seaboard, prices
figuring 4 guilders up from yesterday. Bales
of 200,000 bushels of contract corn were made
to go to store. .
Oats were easier with other grains. No
feature Was noted. Sales of 50,000 bushel
of contract oats were reported to go to store.
Provisions were lower with hogs snd grain.

COTTOJT MARKET LESS OlfE"-
SIDEDj PRICES DROP EARLY
New York, Dec, 19. -Without disclosing any
radical . change in conditions several factors
combined to produce a leas one-sided cotton
market today.
Aetiva Southern selling, in progress for sev
eral days, continued and a large quantity of
Christmas cotton appeared. ' Liverpool quieted
down, indicating a corresponding degree of
pressure in that quarter. An easier?-' grain snd
stock market deprived cotton of acme of -the
most activo speculative support noticeable re
cently. .
Soon after he opening selling became suf
ficiently general to carry May back to 26.10,
a reaction of nearly 20 points, while both
March and July sold below 26-cents. .This
setback attracted outside buying with a re
cover;, of a Quarter cent in March around mid
day. $
MILLS ARE 3fOT PRESSING
SALES flF COTTOST CLOTH
New York, Dec. 19. The cotton elotlis
market did not need any great volume of busi
ness in order to maintain a firmness of tone
today. There was a fair business recorded
in standard print cloths at the prevailing price
levels but mills evidently were not pressing
sales. Sheetings are in demand for spot de
livery and there was some activity in drills
and sateens.
The raw silk market was active here in
reflection of the firmness reported in cables
from Yokohama. Prises locally, however,
fell off slightly. Quotations were tTT, 13-16
and 2 0-2 2s denier, $8.40; XXB, $8.35;
extra, $8.80: best, No. 1 X. $8.27 H; No.
1. $8.25; Kansai. No. 1, $8.20; Canton.
14-16, $7.63; Canton. 20-22, $7.05.
Although large blocks of cotton were of
.fered durina. the afternoon, the market took
all offerings and closed a few points higher
than tha previous day for several positions.
