The committee of 10 received notice
of the 'favorable action of the state
highway commission,' when it waa in
session in the courthouse. Notice came
in a telegram from Frank Parker,
member of the committee who went to
Portland .to appear before the commis
sion with Mayor Baker.- Parker's tele-
la-ram read "Mayor Baker, in a mat
ter of fact way - peculiar - to mm.
vleaded our cause beiore the state
highway commission. The result was
favorable beyond any dream or ex
pectation. State ' Highway Commis
sioner Nunn Is instructed to get on the
Job immediately and prepare estimates
for opening the highway from the east
ern city limits to Toungs Bay bridge,
and he goes down by automobile this
afternoon. The commission will with
draw its request to the county court In
connection with the east approach and
will .take care of the new Lewis and
Clark bridge, except for the $20,000 on
-our budget. The senators and repre
sentatives to sit in January are to be
interviewed as to legislation permit
ting, this Astoria relief and If favor
able the commission will go right to it.

tion asking $5,000,000 aid for Astoria,
Senator McNary was called to confer
with the president, who expreased deep
interest .and sympathy and s said he
would call upon . army I .engineer . to
make full survey of the situation and

When this report is received Senator
McNary will confer ' further with' the
president as to measure that may be
recommended. -? His resolution '.follows
the Galveston and San Francisco pre-
cedenta . Congress lacks power to ap
propriate, for rebuilding a city or -to
