"Engines improperly warmed are al
most certain to stall when the gas is

"Any attempt: to shift gears while
crossing1 a .track; is extremely foollsn.
"When this la tried: there Is always cer
tain a. nervous confusion that . causes'
failure of the gears to mesh, and In
fussing' with the gear lever the engine
is often stalled. That Is why It Is wise
to shift Into second before getting any
nearer the rails than 60 feet.
; Try to be sore the tracks are clear
before trying to cross, A motorist can
not atop the oar and walk out to look
up and down the railroad right of way,
but he can use reasonable car. Often
buildings, trees or hills obstruct the
view of the tracks and the motorist
has to take some chance in crossing,
but he doesn't need to go outand hunt

The Buick . four showed - the' lowest

. "In the military testa the cars were
driven over a measured course from
Tokyo to Kamakura and return, a dis
tance of 124 kilometers," McQee said.
The road leads through a hilly coun
try. It was winding and narrow and
most of the way covered with loose
gravel and e tones. There waa not a
mile over the entire route that would
be rated as a flrst class road - in
America or Europe. As the Japanese
roads are always crowded with rick
shaws, pushcarts, pedestrians . - and
playing children, not to mention a good
sprinkling of livestock, chickens and
dogs, it is Impossible to keep up a mum
tained speed to obtain fuel economy.
MADE GOOD SHOWING
"In view f the running conditions.
the records of the Buick four, which
waa 18.98 miles pergallon American
gallon), was aa excellent showing.
Considering the fact that the car waa
only unboxed a day or two before the
contest, the results are even more de
serving of comment. The sales of the
car in Japan had been so heavy that
when the date of the contest waa an
nounced the Tokyo, dealer did not have
a car in stock that had been properly
limbered up and broken in. Unboxing
a -car only a few days before the test.
he had little .time for tuning it up and
the car entered in practically the same
condition that it was received from the
factory. Throughout the test It carried
four to five passengers.
"Kamakura Is ons of the famous
places of Japan visited by all tour
ists. It is a picturesque and historic
seaside resort, formerly the capital of
Japan, largely destroyed during the
middle ages..- The great Aaibutsu, or

est interest to tourists, 'It was cast
