I Labor's friendliness toward the pres
ent a: as expressed in resolutions
adopted by the- Stats Federation ot
CLabor In its recent annual session here,
!has been - repeatedly: reiterated by
leader Of the labor movement in this
.state, since those who are antagonistic
ito the compensation law. in its present
form began laying their lines for the
ibattls which is expected to be waged
(at the forthcoming legislative session.
Considering tbe opposition 'which the
compensation act met at the. bands of
organised labor prior to its enactment,
this about-face on -its part is one of
tbe remarkable developments resulting
from ths administration of the act, and
labor's position with, respect to tbe act
must necessarily be 'taken Into consid
eration by those who are plotting- its
doom,- . - '
AXD ULBOBETG MAX
. It Is known that an organized ef
fort WiB be made to have the legis
lator amend the law - for the benefit
of casualty insurance companies and
certain employers who. want tbe privi
lege f selx-tnsurance.-
- ir is the contrast between the old
day when- an injured workman had to
deal with the cold-blooded agents of
tha casualty fnsoranoa companies and
the present method ef receiving: com
pensation from" the state without delay
or dickering that has won for tbe com
pensation uw ths friendship and sup
port of tha laboring man, :- ; j ; u: ?
- Organised labor opposed tha enact
ment of the compensation law in the
first place on tbe mistaken theory that
they would lose mora than they would
sain -If the right of suit for damages
under the employers' liability law was
taken from them. .. ;
' Bo( during the .years that' the com
pensation law has been in effect they
have seen erei-y injured workman with
a alld claim receive , compensation
benaflu promptly and in ' full. They
have seen tha efforts of tha state, act
ing through tha State industrial acci
dent commission, to rehabilitate in
jured workmen and to render them
every service possible. -
BEST StTBGEOXS FITKKISHD
-The rehablUtatlon of injured work
men includes both physical and voca
tional rehabilitation. The , best eur
geons and specialists In the state are
available for injured workmen under
the protection of tha compensation-act
and it is the policy, of the Industrial
accident commission to do everything
possible to restore an injured man to a
condition as nearly normal as possible
before closing . case : After aa" this
has been done, if the Injured nfan is
stiU so badly disabled, that be is unfit
to return to his old employment he is
given an opportunity for retraining in
some trade suitable to his handicapped
condition. - During bis period of traifl
ing he is given an additional allowance
sufficient to meet the living expenses
of himself and family. This additional
allowance is not deducted from' his
compensation. ; , . -.
It is- this element of prompt, payment
of compensation and of service to the
Injured and his family at tha time their
need is greatest that has so completely
won the support of the laboring; man
for Ote compensation law. .
