last night . In the" bands of Directors
Martin and Pickering-. All difficulties
in tha wo of the sals of the bonds
would be removed Hay a favorable de
cision, bond dealers have stated.
The board has been stewing In hot
water during the last few days, sine
L&dd & Tllton's bank withdrew - its
bid for the first issue of $300,000 In
bonds, stating that their attorneys.
Wood & Oakley of Chicago, had given
an opinion that the issue was illegal
because ef the method of posting no
tices for the bond , election. -
WA3CT CASE SETTLED
- ' Local bond dealers, , accepting the
opinion of Teal, Minor Winfree of
Portland that the bonds are legal, have
submitted bids sine Ladd 4 Tilton's
. removal, but the Tids have been held
too low and . rejected. . Besides be! ng
low, the bids alt had the provision that
they could be withdrawn on advice of
attorneys for the bond houses.
- The board decided it would be better
to have the legality settled once and
for all by the supreme court, .
f Eld ward Cookingham. president of
tdd V Tllton's bank wrote a letter to
the school board, read before the board
Wednesday night, in which be said that
Eastern firms were associated with
tiiM si TiltAi'fi bank in the original
bid for $300,000 -of the school bonds,
and though he eould not answer for

gality had been established, ana at we
- original prlice of $100.04 for H per
cent bonds.
PRICE SLUMPS ' " -
Cookingham expressed disappoint
ment at the opinion" given by Wood
Oakley. ' '
The price of bonds "has slumped
since, the original bid was handed in
and members of the school board origi
nally claimed that there was- some
connection between the drop in price
of bonds and the withdrawal of the
early bid on advice of attorneys.
The board accepted the bid of $62,
865 submitted by Johir-Aimeter for
general work on the eight-room addi
tion to the Kenton school. , They tacked
on the provision, however, that thjs
bid could be rejected if the bonds
were held- invalid. '.,
Bids for plastering the administra
tion building were rejected because
they far exceeded tha estimates of
Odell, superintendent of properties.
