WEMME ESTATE
CASE CONCLUDED
All testimony In the suit of the heirs
at law of the late E. Henry Wemroe
against the six Christian.; Science
churches of Portland, seeking aa ac
counting of a $450,006 endowment fund
andseekittg to re-over the fund from
the control of the churches was com
pleted at noon today, before Circuit
Judge Harry . H. Belt of Pallas, who
is sitting in the circuit court here by
invitation to hear the -case.
Arguments by council representing
both factions probably will be com
pleted late thia afternoon and the ques
tion' submitted to the court. No jury
was empaneled to (iecldej the question.
'' George W. Joseph of Joseph, Haney
4e Liittlefleld, who drew Wermne's will,
which leaves the 8450.000 fund to the
churches 'for a worthy charitable pur
pose. testified - there no secret
understanding between Wemroe . and
the churches and that Wemme under
stood the purpose of the churches and
the terms of the will, and was entirely
competent at the time the will was
drawn.
Miss Jesse Carson, formerly Weni
me's secretary, testified , Wemme had
several plans which were abandoned
for this one specified in ; the will. He
thought first of leaving the fund to
the newspapers for charitable work,
later of a trust fund, and then of the
county and city as directors of the
fund, she said.
IL D. Kifiam. secretary of the
Wemme endowment fund, explained
the methods prescribed by the wilt and
how these specifications were carried
out. The will provided for three
trustees who were to hold the fund
for three years and then form a
stock company. Later the White
Shield; maternity home: waa estab
lished, but was afterwards sold to the
Salvation Army because of a conflict
between state law and the precepts
of the church in caring for maternity
caecs. The law requires tho presence
of a licensed physician.
Council for the heirs said no testi
mony of undue influence in directing
the drawing of the will would be in
troduced, although the original com
plaint contains such allegations.
