Time has dealt kindly with Louis
Knapp and with the city of Portland
during the last 57 years, but the two
have developed along widely variant
lines,; and when Knapp came tip from
Port Orford last week to attend the
livestock: show be found little to re
mind him of the city of 1SS3. which
was the date of his last . visit. For
nearly half a century lioois Knapp has
operated the Knapp hotel at Port Or
ford and has made lew journeys to
the Outside world and - none to the
larger cities.

issued an appeal to all persons who
are preparing to send Christmas pack
ages abroad to get them into the mails
early. The overseas holiday period of
mailing begins November IS. and the
last "Christmas ship!, will leave Kew
York; about December 1 or 15, Direc
tions for proper preparation of pack
ages for mailing may be had from the
postmaster at each station in the city.
It is important that each; package be
properly addressed and prepared for

ths police caught A. J. Jordon, reputed

a charge of burglary. .

believe they have I found one of ths
men who has been making them so
much trouble in the business district of
ths city. Their theory -was strength
ened when R X. Ratchf ord. night
clerk at the Eaton hotel, advised them
that he had seen Jordon carrying a
revolver, Jimmy bar and flashlight. A
thorough search of Jordon's room
failed to reveal ths burglar tools. Po
lice suspect Jordon. has thera hidden
some place outside the hotel.
r When arrested Jordon feigned
drunkenness, and claimed he had pur
chased the coat 4aat week. Police an
swered his alibi by showing him the
Rosenblatt store paper tags still on
the - coat. . .

Herman Wise, former postmaster at
Astoria, would like to be appointed
state highway commissioner, or to
membership tn one of the other major
cotnmmissions. r
" A. M. Dalrymple of Salem has his
eye on the job now held by R. B. Good
in, as cleric of the state board of con
trol. This place pays $3000 a year, but
it is under the jurisdiction of the state
board, consisting ot the governor, sec
retary of state ahd stAts treasurer.
O. B. Pierce of Salem 'also wants a
job of a clerical nature t andt In addi
tion, there are others who have com
menced active campaigns to land them
selves on the state payroll, ranging all
the way from heads of institutions,
physicians at the same, down to guards
at ths penitentiary, attendants at the
state hospitals and general uillty men
on the highway cqramlssioh.
Incidentally. the rumor has Also
sprung ufr that one of ths first things
