Freeman Fike entertained the senior
class of Franklin high Thursday, Octo
ber 26, with a Halloween costume party
at the home of his parents. No. 6113
48th street southeast. The house was
appropriately decorated with pump
kins, black cats and .witches. There
were about 40 guests, all in fancy
drees. Eunice Hartmess won first
prize and Nellie Hall won second prise.
Richmond
Richmond school has an enrollment
of 740 pupils. The teaching staff has
been Increased to 20. The hew teachers
are Miss Naylor. Miss Carter and Miss
Johnson. ' '
'The pupils have just completed a
paper drive. -Over 14 tons of paper
were brought In. The money received
from the sale of this paper will be used
to pay the Junior Red Cross association
and to buy equipment for the sdhool.
The school orchestra . is again at
work under the direction of Mrs. j Fin-
ley with Miss Foster as pianist.
The teachers' chorus has begun its
year's work with Professor Fnley.
They are working on a number of se
lections and will unite with other
choruses of Professor Flnley's In the
near future.
A luncheon was given on Thursday
noon. October 12. In honor of Professor
Steele's birthday and the new teach
ers . After the lunch a program of
stunts was given.

mond school, is attending the Parent
Teacher convention In Eugene.

The Parent-Teacher association gave
a reception to the teachers of the Park
Place schools Saturday evening, at the
pleasant home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H.
Holmes. The rooms and hall were
decorated with autumn leaves and bou
quets of flowers. Halloween games
were enjoyed. Interposed with songs
and music A buffet lunch consisting
of sandwlshea, cake and coffee" was
served.

Odin Holman, 19. was arrested Sun
day afternoon on a charge of reckless
driving in Park Placa and arraigned
before Justice Noble. Besides suffer
ing a broken shoulder hone and bruised
head when the motorcycle on which
he was riding collided with an auto
mobile driven by F. C Oilman his li
cense .was suspended for six months,
and he Was given the choice of serving
six months in the county jail or leaving
his motorcycle with the officers for the
six months' period. He turned the mo
torcycle over to the officers in prefer
ence to serving this sentence Imposed;

signed on account of a severe surgical

of Portland and veterans of th Fil
ipino insurrection and the Boxer rebel
lion will hereafter be entitled to treat
roent for mental, riervoua and itubercu
lous ailments and diseases in hospitals
of the Pacifio Northwest under the di
rection of the United States Veterans
bureau. :. This is a. new move on the
part of the government announced to
day by Kenneth L. Cooper.-local man
ager of the bureau. r Heretofore no spe
cial provision had been made, for hos
pitalisation of these American , War vet

An important feature of the new rul
ing is that these veterans are not re
quired to show, proof of service origin
of their disabilities, , Mr. Cooper said;
Honorable discharge and physical ex
amination showing present condition of
the veteran are the only requirements
for rehabilitation in government Insti
tutions occupied now entirely by World
war veterans, ho said.
Hospitals - in the Pacific Northwest
district under the jurisdiction of the
Veterans' bureau are located In Taco
ma, Portland. Boise and Walla "Walla.
Application for hospital treatment
should be made by Spanish-American
war veterans and service men of the
other two' conflicts at the local office
of the bureau ln the Myler building. It

claims for dental disabilities due to war;
service before August 9 of this year,'
or within a year-after their discharges
are eligible-for dental treatment at th
expense of the' government even
though the degree of disability is less
than 10 per cent This announcement

and the representative he sent, was
not empowered to make any promises.
The city- has refrained from :-, granting
a motor-bus franchise in order to in
duce -the Southern Pacific to keep up
a good service. The auto-bus fare to
Portland would ' fee practically the
same as the- present railroad fare,
which is the top notch war-time fare.
The council which reflects the senti
ment of the . Oswego people, believes
that Oswego Is entitled to as good
service at as reasonable a fare as
points on the eastide of the river and.
