of the tragedy, testified she had a bot

The defense has sought to prove, that
twice before tho .murders, Mrs. Rosier
attempted to take her life, despairing
of winning her husbftnd back. They
are also seeking to prove that on the
day she shot Rosier and hi stenog
rapher she weni before then to take

of Mrs. Oilie Blowers, and a tassel
from the. cape found by Sheriff Low
near the body, of Tom Montojra was
the startling evidence that figured to
day In the' trial of Mrs. Blowers,
charged with first degree murder in
connection with the death dt Montoya.
The cape, ft was brought out, was
found in Mrs. Blowers halfway house
on .The Dalles-California highway.
She -asked permission to wSar it upon
her return to this city with the officers.
but was refused -by- Sheriff Low, who
offered his coat in its. stead. It is
expected the case will go to the jury

The elder Pettibone sob. who has been
out of the city, declared Saturday
night that the police failed in handling
the case- in the following particulars : :
That they did not k follow the
poisoning theory when a city physician
reported, after a perfunctory visit that
Mrs. Pettibone probably was' not
poisoned at all but was euffering from

When the examination ' conducted for
the' police by a chemist showed , no
drugs in the coffee-cup from which
she had drunk. ; ''

When the police disregarded infor
mation that a telegram had been re
ceived the day" after the woman's ill
ness and after Mrs. Pettibone nad gone
to Rosebuxg in response to a "fake
telegram presumably sent by Batche
lor himself. This reaL telegram, he
said, would have shown that Mrs.
lielen Batchelor, the. daughter, was
ajive and well. , ' ,

clared, Batchelor left .for San Fran
cisco by train Sunday night. So far
as he was able to ascertain, he said,
the police did not .follow up any of the
suggestions 'Mrs. Pettibone had made
as to where Batchelor might have gone
when- he left the Pettibone house.

'sleeping powders' in a cup. which Mrs.
Pettibone had taken by mistake is die
