Together they . mean ; mock fur the rmrcbartng power of the agriealtaral districts and therefor hare-. a very powerful bearing upon the entire easiness outlook for 1823. It would hare been better, of course, tn the. ea. of both cotton and wheat, if the improvement in pricea bad been broeght about by iacrease, f foreign and , bom demand, rather than through . deereaee in tile -prospective supply. Stock WoeewvantJMlMad The- days stock market a a whole was imply a repetition of the type of the markets now. grown ao familiar. ,x Indirhiaal stocks were tacrine -in ' opposite - directions. . "where interest was constantly going .out of one group- inU another, and where price settlement changes in coiieeqaence were : extremely confused. A market et this kind meam only that the pro fessional; operators are simultaneoosly selling anwia atnckm while burins others, and that the stocks being sold are made to look wvlk, wAdlej the taocks being ooagni.. appeal strong. . a mW the high priced industrials eharea in which the public has tittle interest, whteb. are aaostly in control of wealthy investors and speculative capitalist were of the sort of stock most favored. ., Speculative ezeitement oyer the Mexican Oils was raatained at a high pitch by the statement of the president of these companies that, while no plana, for distribution of treas ury assets hsd been' perfected, they had been under consideration for some time. With this encouragement, speculative Wall 'street contin ued to indulge Its Imagination regarding other companies which might : be in a position to distribute stock diridends; and this led to a general taking up of high priced industrial spe cialties. Meanwhile the : rest of the list was a good deal unsettled and after the first hour or so was inclined tn sell off. FreAoh Cashing Weak T "In marked contrast to the strength of Brit th exchange was the weakness in French ex change. Th break in franca to a new low for tl WM h" to exchange. Moat of the decline occurred before the New York opening and was apparently sympathetic with a similarly sharp decline in the Paris cheque in London. Seers) times before this year the Paris cheque has been affected by British pressure brought to beaa) upon France to meet maturing indebt edness. Today may hare been another occa sion of t4 kipd. cleMinj in the. stock market increased as the afternoon ' went on.. Prices came down rather s! i i ply for a time ail through the hst, -but, n the last hour the market steadied and at -the same time sjuited down. . . : a Las Slum For this afternoon's rathes sharp decline on the . stock -. exchange there was so explanation in the outside news.. It was nothing more than a -reaction due to one of the temporary ahTlx in sentiment, which- always distinguish a market dominated by cliques and profes sional . operators. ' Catt - money came down. The violent upbidding of some of the in dustrial shares had evidently precipitated sell ing in other directions and tt was this which told upoa.the dealings of the last two honrs. In every year of its career but one, deposits have shown a steady increase. During its 30 years the Hibernia Bank has seen Portland grow from a town of 88,000 to a metropolis of 300,000. It has stood the test of two panics and two wars and has held a steady keel through boom years and lean years. It has grown from a bank spon sored by a few to a modern financial institution with over 18,000 accounts. The original deposits (commercial and sav ings) have grown from : $19,000 to over $5,000,000. The Hibernia Commercial and Savings Bank will spare no effort to preserve the confidence it has won and to justify its rec ord as a conservative custodian.
