IS OPENED
The 4Q-8 meeting" opened this after
noon in Jerusalem temple. Mystic
Shilne, ol-JSew.1 Orleans. The sessions
joffthe '-Sunshine" order of the Ameri
cB Legion are scheduled for each aft
errtoon and they conflict -with the gi
gantic athletic program.
Oregon athletes who have entered the
competition this week are Ward Eul
Hch of , Portland and former Multno
rjiait Amateur Athletic ' club Pacific
coast wrestling champion in the 12?
" pound mat Class, and A. R. Dorris of
Scappoose in the rifle, and pistol con
.' tests. Dorris holds several medals for
' his marksmanship and' although he did
not bring his own arms with him he
is confident that the range will be sat
isfactory for him to be up in the run
ning. WITHDRAW. THOM GOLF
Mr. and Mrs. Pat Allen of Portland
havS found it necessary to scratch
their names from the golf entries be
cause Pat has more things to do with
the convention than four ordinary men
could do and besides this the finals are
- not due until Sunday. The Aliens don't
want to take any chance of getting
that far and then being forced to de
fault because they have to, catch a
train for Detroit. They' en jo3?d sever
al rounds with , Nick Jrhn of Seattle
last Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday afternoon several of the
Oregon fodtbaH enthusiasts journeyed
to the Tuiane university- stadium to
ee the -annual Tulane-Springhill
game. They were informed that it was
a typical southern style contest, all of
which did not seem to come up to ex
pectations as far as western play is
concerned. One handicap under which
the athletes labored was the weather.
A hot sun and plenty of it beamed
forth. ,
SAX FRANCISCO BIDS
San Francisco is making a great bid
for next year's American Legion con
vention, and late last night it was di
vulged tftat"6pposition in the form of
j Baltimore, Md., was in the field. The
Native Sons and Daughters, 120 of
-' them, all dressed in the "story book"
miner style of red shirts, sombreros,
t'boots and overalls, took the city by
storm on their arrival early last night,
and they immediately began -pinning
L the famous golden poppy on everyone.
The Oregon delegates voted to sup-
port the Californiaus.
' BRILLIANT DECORATIONS
; An idea of what New Orleans busl-
N riesa men have done in the way of
. elaborate street deoorations . can - be
gained in the statement that more than
50,000 incandescent electric lights are
strung along Canal etreet,he widest
street in sj.irica, and for Mocks along
" cross 'streets in the" -..heart of the old
, and New Orleans. t V
Sixty bands' are on hand to compete
. for the $1000 cash prize for the best
affair in the gigantic parade listed for
.Wednesday afternoon, and as a result
impromptu concerts i:Te being staged
' on the -streets and in hotel lobbies.
TO BEBriLD PLANT
i; Vancouver, B. C, Oct 16 M. N. S.)
t Pfatns were made today to rebuild the
' plant of the False Creek Lumber com
pany, which was wiped out last night
