Hamilton of the Hamilton Narcotics
Institute of Seattle, who took the, four
men. all confined in the Portland; city
jail, and treated them under labora
tory conditions, where they cfould be
watched by Dr. George JParrish, city
health officer, and any physicians tr
the city who might wish to make ob

Now all of the men are out of the
jail, though they are required to keep
in touch with Dr.' Parrieji every day.
So far, though all unquestionably have
had opportunities, none has returned
.to the use of morphine, and none has
. shown any desire to return.
"The cure is by far the best of any
i I have ever seen used, said Dr, R. W.
; Garhart, Saturday. Dr. Garhart had
I the men under observation from- the
: time the first injection of the cure was
'given s week ago last Thursday.
. "I have seen many things tried," he
i sai d, "but this stands out from the
others because of one particular 'virtue.
When the direct physical effect of the
, ordinary cure has worn off, the patient
suffert terrible pains in the arms, legs
and other parts of the, body. He can
hardly wait until he can secure a
'shot' of the drug- he uses.
"But the nien, who have been treated
by Dr Hamilton; apparently have no
such pains.' Neither do they have any
pathological icriving for 'the drug.
FRIENDS RUIN THEAI
"Remember, I am ot thoroughly
convinced even yet. A person who has
been using ; drugs for years has no
friends but addicts, no one to turn to
but these addict friends when he is
out of luck'. They wfifl tell him,
"You're cured now. You "can take a
'""little shot'. However, I do feel fairly
certain so far that a person, who has
been- using the drug for only a year or
two can be absolutely cured by Dr.
Hamilton's method if ; he has any
brains." ,
THEI WA5 TO EAT, .
The four; men on whom the cure
were tried iwere given the first injec
tion a week ago Thursday and then
another injection every 12 hours for
six injections. Sunday morning, after
long hours of delirium, they awakened,
all within five minutes ot- each other.
They looked around and instead of
asking tor morphine, asked :
"When do we' eat?"
They appeared happy ; they sneezed,
which an addict "never does ; they re?1
mained -hungry and frolicsome. One
has been found a place In a logging
camp, one is going to a chicken .ranch
and places will be found for the others.
In the meantime, -the physicians watch
ing the experiment are keeping close
tab Upon them.
Dr. Hamilton's cure ' is being kept
secret. It is a chemical composition
that he perfected five years ago after
years of experimentation.

the necessary' papers and the deputy

this morning. Two hours later Wil
kinson secured a . restraining order
from Court Commissioner Haddock,
but the prisoner aind deputy were out
side the jurisdiction of the court. The
route taken by the deputy 4s not
known.

It was anticipated that the allied
generals would be notified soon of the

London, Oct. 7. France's pro-Turk
policy, which is increasingly aggravat
ing to Great Britain, was revealed tb
Universal Service tonight from high
diplomatic sources as decidedly polit
ical and militaristic.
-France at the present moment, is
the leading military .power of the
world. This position she intends to
maintain. Frightened at her alarming
ly decreasing birth rate, which hv caus
ing a serious decimation in the stand
ing army. the French supreme war
council has decided to enlist the huge
Moslem reservoir of man-powfr to
maintain her army enrollments. .
Already one-third of the personnel of
the French army is colored: A 'a re
cent meeting of the war council .-the
decision was reached to increase this
number until it is at least one-half
of the total. This action was taken,
according to Universal Service's In
formation, as a result of a report sub
mitted by General Nevelle, strongly
supported by Marshal Lyautey and
Generals Gourant and MangUi.

It was hoped to obviate this course,
which is bound to cause the greatest
criticism from the Western powers, by
annexing as allies arid using the armies
of the hew states -of Eastern Europe
the Ciechs,- Poles, Jugo-Slavs, and
Roumanians. . "
But these ' states proved unwilling
to be treated as mere reserve cannon
fodder for the French general staff.
Therefore., recource had to be had to

This, it is understood, is ' the real
reason why France ; wants to see. the
restoration of a large Turkish empire

care has spoken his mind to a dis
tinguished Amerean visitor regarding
British activities in the straits.
"We do not hate, but we despise the
Greeks.1 We are sorry for the Arme
nians, but we cannot tolerate a Brit-
hsh hegemony at Constantinople or on
the straits."
NEAR. EAST PEACE PARIiET ,

Paris, Oct. 7. U. P.) A Near East
ern peace parley was called ' for No
vember 1 today. Scutari. Turkey, was
tentatively selected as the place of
the conference. Calling of the confer
ference by France followed an agree
ment which was reached by the gov
emments of France, Great Britain and
Italy that ..the Greeks must evacuate
Thrace at once and 'that the Turkish
army must not enter that territory
until after peace .ias been concluded.
This agreement on a Near Eastern
policy was drawn up by Lord Curzon,
foreign minister of Great Britain, and
Premier Poincare of France and sanc
tioned by representatives of Italy.
The French and British cabinets met
