Tho ! pier devoted principally to the handling, of grain, flour and coqjstwise shipments is filled practically to ce pacity with transient freight passing .over the docks to and from all parts of the world. At present there is stored at the docks 4.000 tons of Oriental cargo brought to Astoria by two ves sela and awaiting -trans-shipment. - Included in this freight are valuable Chinese rugs arid cerpets : and mat tings of the cheaper grade, most of which willgo io Atlantic coast in the intercoastat trade. ! Off-shore and intercoastal business at the local docks is constantly in creasing. Additional units are being added to thei equipment of the port docks for handling a huge quantity of grain to be shipped soon from here. Since January 1 of this year approxi mately 10,000,000 feet of lumber have been handled across the docks, the larg er part of which was sprucei from local mills and from mills up and down the Oregon coast. The spruce brought here from coast, points was barged here though some came by boat. The de mand for spruce is said to be the great eat ever and to be world-wide. On orte occasion spruce shipments were, pilesd side by side destined for Glasgow, Loti don, Paris, Hamburg, Capetown, Hyrl ney, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, .New York, Baltimore and Los Ar.geies.
