JPromment baptist Leaders to oll Conference Here BIG RALLY WILL FOLLOW The Baptiat of the city are looking forward to the coming of a team of prominent leaders of the denomination, who will hold a conference in Portland Tuesday afternoon and evening. The conference will begin at 3 o'clock. The visitors will be : Kev. James A. Fran cis D. .. Rev. M. B. Eubank, M. D., Rev. P. C. Wright, D. D., and Mrs. Orin.Judd. Dr. Francis is in great demand, not only in his own denomination, but ss a speaker cm tiic public platform. Be is pastor of the First Baptist Church of Los Angeles, and exercises crest influence in the councils of the denomirurtion. He will speak at the conference in the afternoon and at the great rally of the young people Tuesday evening in the White Temple, at 7:4 5. Ir. Eubank was a medical missionary in China, and was prominent in government af fairs durinf the Boxer rebellion. He was in the inside political circle when the Uaoehu dynasty was overthrown. Be. Peter Wright represents the Ministers' and Missionaries' Benefit fund, an insurance organization for Baptist ministers that has gathered over (9,000.000. Mrs. Orin Judd has been for many years with the National Woman's Missionary organi sation. The ladies will hold a luncheon for Mrs. J odd at tt o'clock at Hotel Seward. Tues day e renins. Dr. Francis will speak in the White Temple Sunday morning and at the Highland Bap tut church in the evening. Dr. Eubank will speak in Grace Baptist church, Montavilla, Sunday morning, and in Arleta Sunday evening. There will be a luncheon at noon on Mon day for the layman and the ministers. Reception to Be Given New Pastors A reception in honor of the new pas tors and their wives who have been recently assigned to . Methodist churches in Portland will be held Mon day night "at the First Methodist church. Bishop Charles Wesley Burns, who has been holding conferences in the Northwest for several weeks, will be the guest of honor and the principal speaker. The reception to the preach ers and their wives will be at 7 :30 o'clock. From 8 to 8 :30 o'clock there will be an organ recital by Gladys Farmer Morgan. At 8 :30 o'clock Mrs. IJoldie Peterson Wesler will sing, fol lowed by an address by Bishop Burns on "The Living Christ in the Modern World." The reception will be given tinder the auspices of the City Church Extension society and the district cab inet. All the Methodist -churches in the city and vicinity will send large delegations led by their pastors. Nesbitt Byars, pastor of Lincoln Meth odist church the Rev. T. L. Jones, 80 years old and "Blind, has consented to occupy the pulpit of Lincoln Methodist church. East 62d and Lincoln streets, Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. The Kev. Mr, Jones has been a member of the Oregon conference for over 50 years and is well known throughout the Willamette valley. Many of his friends are expected at this service to hear him preach. The Rev. Mr. Byars recently underwent a minor operation from which he is recovering rapidly, but on the advice of his physicians will not attempt to preach until Oc tober 1. Sunday night the pulpit will be supplied, by the Rev. CX C. Rarick, district evangelist. Rev. Sutcliffe's Class of Interest One of the most interesting meetings of the Portland Union Bible classes is that held at 7 :15 on Monday evenings, when Rev. B. B. Sutcliffe, the teacher, presents the International Sunday school lesson for the following Sunday. The Gospel through Luke will be the subject of study for the next six months, beginning with October. A Heist, pastor of the First Methodist church, who has been returned here for another year, leads all previous pastors in the number of members added to the church and in the amount of money raised. For the coming year a secretary will be employed and an assistant pastor will be appointed to take charge of the work of the church in the outlying districts. The congregation of the East Side Christian church. East 12th and Taylor streets, is con centrating activities on the revival meeting which will begin October 1, with the Ross Evangelical company. This team consists of tier. Floyd Ross, evangelist and director of music; Mrs. Ross, director of women's work and 'cellist, and Miss Dorothy Boss, pianist and trombonist. Bev. Mr. Ross is said to preach a vigorous and "old-fashioned" gospel. A large chorus choir and orchestra will be features.
