As rule sales of Elbcrtaa are shown around 60 to 7 Bo a box, although large sixes would command a slight premium. For the first time ia many weeks there was an actual scramble for peaches in the whole sale trade during the day. Instead of a termer Duraensotne surplus the trade had few peaches to offer. Most of thh consisted of oaat ana ends. Select stock, therefore, com manded a premium Even Willamette valley Beech nnnS an- pear to be dwindling and Yakima offering are scant. The Dalles continues to ship, but its offerings are decreasing. The outlook, there fore, is for an early closing of the peach trade so ia as quantity oirencg ia concerned. The stronger tone of the market - was plainly indicated by the reluctance of mill agents to accept olds tor later year deliveries at present prices. Printers continued in the' market for print cloths, with special activity in the narrower numbers Sheetings reflected the better tone by slight advances in some constructions and gateens, which have been active and in demand, con tinued to attract much attention. Shoe drills and twills are being ordered well into next year. The raw silk market continued to reflect the optimism of importers snd the better de mand from broad silk manufacturers. Coaen European news waa the big bullish factor ia the world's wheat trade Friday. Price advances were scored at practically all leading centers, with cash wheat bids generally con tinued above the options. Foreign and domestic markets alike snowed apprehension regarding the possibilities of real conflict between Britain ana mrzey ana eve dally so since France and Italy left England to fight it out alone. Uveroool market responded to this condition Thursday with an open-advance of 2d fer September and 1 d lor Decemrjer wmie trie closing was at an advance of 2 to Sd as compared with Thursday's finals. Quickly following the Liverpool advance. South America markets stiffened and advanced at the opening. Chicago orjtiona ware also higher and private advices were to the effect that cash wheat premiums were somewbat suffer and bigner. Portland cash wheat market was firm around 81.12 for white dab or Western white for export although sales were reported but not confirmed for immediate delivery at 1 to c above thi. The prices named are for delivery within 10 days. For October delivery casn wheat buyers were freely offering $1.09 and even $1.10 early in the day. Very liberal increase in the marketing of export grades of wheat ia shown at Pacific Northwest points and especially for Portland delivery. Practically all exporters are buying wherever possible, aa most of them have imme diate shipa to fill. Milling wheat continues to show more or less neglect owing to tlfe difference in opinion of millers and growers as to the premiums that should be available for such offerings above the export basia. Naturally in view of the complicated foreign situation there is a firmer demand for milling wheat but the views of buyers and sellers are still somewhat apart One thing spears certain at the moment The price of flour is rare to quickly follow any material upward awing of milling wheat bids. Already this ia noticeable in the export-lour market. A further advance of 1 Oc per barrel is quoted in that line, al though no confirmation of sales to the Orient is yet noted at tha advance. The new price is $5.20 for blueatem cutoff and $4.90 for club straight Broomhall Cabled: The market for wheat in the United Kingdom is about steady but the demand is not very active. Offers of Manitobaa are less pressing while American winters are being firmly held. Situation in corn remains steady but the market is quiet with demand not active. Offerings of Amer ican aorta are slightly better but holders ehow no disposition to sell at concessions. Plate offers while not pressing, are generally increasing. FAIR ACTIVITY IN POTATO TRADE Potato market is reflecting a fair decree of activity locally, bat there is no shipping call whatever for Willamette valley stock because of the lower prices that other sections are teUinc Landed cost of No. 1 potatoes from other states ia aot above 81-11 per cental, Port land track, therefore, this sets to some extent the extreme limits of local potato purchases. While It is trie that Yakima potatoes have given practically no aaUsfactioa to the trade here this season, there is always a certain per cent of the trade that is "sold" on such stock and will purchase nothing else, even if better. This is due to some extent by the propoganda issued during recent years by local wholesalers who have been able to make greater profita on the sale of Yakima and other outside offerings because of the holding for higher price by local growers. Eastern potato markets are mixed in char acter, Chicago showing weakness, while St Louis is firmer. Primary markets of the Pacific Northwest are alow.
