Qraim 75 Farmers
Will Participate in
Market Venture
I Estimates Thursday were that fully
71 farmers would participate in the new
(garket being established at Second
and Alder streets, oirering tneir own
products of orchard and garden.
(Although this is a private venture, it
will. In-a sense, compete with the Yam
hill public market with similar arrange
ment of stalls, although the stalls will
be under roof and arranged along an
arcade through the block.
.-1 Advantages of the farmers' market
vover street markets, as explained by
the promoters, are that the block is
surrounded by city earlines and adjacent-to
interurban lines, with ample
apace for buyers shut off from sun and
' 8torm.
It was announced Thursday that
farmers are bringing products from as
far as Hood River and Grants Pass.

Oregon Apples io '
Grace Dining Cars
Of N. P. Railroad
Apples from the i Hod Elver and
Yakima valleys wjll be featured to the
dining cars and hotels of the Northern
Pacific railway, ystem this year' on
the "same seals that made the "Big
Baked Potato" famous on the line for
many years,, according to announce
ment mads Thursday by 1. Owen,
superintendent of the dining car
service. ,. -. ' ;
Owen came to the Northwest on bis
annual apple and potato purchasing
trip and reported that the Northern
Pacific wUl take 8000 boxes of apples
from Oregon and Washington to store
in Its own refrigerating rooms this
year.
"We are picking only the choicest
apples to be found in the country and
have been making a survey in prepar
ation for the apple service feature
which has proven to us that the best
apples are to be found in the Hood
River and Yakima valleys," said
Owen.
As a part of the campaign for the
apple feature the dining ear department
has prepared 11 special ways of pre
paring the fruit. 'Through this feature
the Northern Pacific expects to draw
the attention of tourists to the prims
quality of fruit produced in the North
west. The varied methods of preparing
and ' serving this product will be emphasised.
- Owen, formerly was dining car su
perintendent for the a. p.- a. with

The fdif ference between what the producer getl! for his
product and what the consumer pays for it has unquestion
ably been too great. In spite of that fact, you see very few
retailers getting rich. Waste accounts for it. The cost of
doing business in the average, individually operated store
is too high. SKAGGS STORES system is doing much to
eliminate that waste. Here is just one sa.ving: In 100
average stores there would be 100 buyers. For the more
thanlOO SKAGGS STORES there are 5 buyers. One
twentieth of the buying expense ! We make many -other
savings proportionately as important, and our patrons get
the benefit. -
