For the last three days the Umatilla
Indians have been pitching their tee
pees "von the Round-Up grdunds and
last night were mixing the war paint
which they will don today for the three
day session. Poker ,Jim. aged Indian
chief who claims he is the last of the
eld leaders, has rounded up the wild
est and fiercest of his tribe and their
- decorations and habiliments are said
to be particularly lavish this year.
BIO PARADE SATURDAY"
On Saturday mornin? is scheduled
the famous Westward-Ho parade in
which all Round-Up performers and
attaches take part. In addition spe
cial floats, depicting the early life of
the pioneers in cabin and on the range,
will traverse- the principal streets of
the city. The parade is one of the fea
ture events of the annual show and
every effort is made to make it remain
long in the memory of those who wit
ness it

ma. who. with her maids-fn-waiting.
Miss Jean Skene of Portland. Miss Al-ladv?s-
Scroggins of La Grande and
Miss Jessie Drumheller of Walla
Walla, will appear in the parade on
snow white mounts from the Drum
heller stables. Queen Theima is Miss
Thelma Thompson if Pendleton.
The town has taken on a gala ap
pearance and the Round-Up spirit has
seized upon the citizen and the
stranger within the gates alike. Today
it will be seen in actuality whon the
huge crowd leaps to its feet to cheer
and cheer again the Round-Up riders
on the bucking horses. The scene is
-- perennial and one that sets the blood
of the visitor to the Round-Up, young
and old. atingle with the pulse", of the
spirit of the West.
j LET 'ER BUCK FLASHES
Pendleton. Sept. 21. One of the
unique sights of Leterbuckville is the
" garb of the Pendletonlans. This year,
. more so than ever before, the local
citizens have taken to the loud shirts,
most of them of silk and expensive ;
the broad-rimmed hats, wild vests and
some to boots and spurs. Easterners
have found occasion to stop, look and
listen at some of the get-ups that pa
rade about the city In seeming Ignor
ance of the mental, commotion they
have occasioned.
Much is expected of Howard Tar
. land, the new Round-Up rider, who
has captured prizes at Cheyenne,
Bozeman and Cody, this year. Ac
cording to Hugo Strickland, himself a
past champion, Tagland will be up
among the first money.

gerous but highly exciting sport with

The cowboy leaps from his horse, rac
ing at a breakneck speed after the
fleeing animal, grabs the steer by the
horns and twists its neck until the
steer takes a reclining position. With

his animal and with tfce other Indicates
that the job is complete by holding
his arm in the air. A gun is fired and

" daggers or red flags associated with
bulldogging. although some think the
sport is fully as dangerous as bull
fighting. Frank McCarroll won the
championship last year. '
A typical Oregon rider is Lorena
Trickey. aspirant for the title of cham
pion all around cowgirl. Miss Trickey
recently m-as injured at the Cheyenne
Frontier j tays show but recovered in
time to fake part in the - riding today.
Miss Trickey was born near The Dalles
and has been riding but four years. She
has been' very successful.
Although many of the characters of
the range, past and present,. now in
Pendleton declare they are "cow-
- punchers," few of them, indeed, can
explain! how the term was fastened on
to their particular variety of the genus
homofAs explained by one local man
the term was "first used to apply to
those who went from cattle car to cat
tle car and punched the cows which
were lying down, to Insure safe pas
sage to market. Reclining bovines often
, are trairided UDon and die. The term
spread and today includes everybody
who wears a big hat and a loud shirt.
One of the toughest buckers in the
Round-Up association's string of 80
has been named George Putnam in
honor of the former Oregon newspaper
man and author who brought out the
party of Eastern writers to see the
show. The horse came from Burnt
Rtver. Another newcomer attracting
much attention 1 is Crepehanger. who
- first saw the Ught of day near On
v tario. Beesknees. a name given in
tribute to the flapper, is an outlaw
from Wyoming.
It is generally agreed that No-Name
is the worst bucking horse in theworld.
Next in the category of the mighty
comes U-Tell-'Em, closely followed by
Bill McAdoo. The latter horse "was
named after Mr. McAdoo when he
visited the Round-Up last year.
The one thtng'that tn- woman riders
don't do is bulldog. It takes a brawny
man" to twist a steer's neck until he
falls down and generally the bulldog
