Is concerned, Portland consumer can be gouged to the extreme by -speculative interests who inhabit the Yamhill street city stalls at nominal expense. Cauliflower, for instance, is quoted at 25 cents a head by the city official, who is paid to protect the housewife against profiteering in the city stalls. The price of cauliflower at wholesale is generally not more than IS cents per dozen, 'and farmers naturally sell to wholesalers even less. At the price asked on. the public market the price manipulators command K profit of at least $2.25 out of a $3 sale. . Consumers can purchase most excellent quality for, less at private stores, where the expense of doing business is heavy. This is the season for big production of cauliflower, and the quality Is ex tremely favorable, with large sized heads available. Consumers need have no fear of pur chasing so-called storage eggs at this time, because the quality, as a rule, is quite favorable and sales are at a con siderable saving to the housewife. The end of the peach canning season is at hand, although the markets are well filled with stock of quality. Small sizes predominate, and are very mod erately priced, while fancy large sizes are scarce and somewhat higher. Retail prices generally show: Butter Fresh creamery, 48 9 52c. Cohan While pTXctScally all other sections of the country at being given specially low rates on potatoes by the railroads, or the latter are preparing to da so. no effort whatever i being made to -give the Western Oregon. Eastern Oregon or Oentral Oregon growers any concession. Railroad interests take practically no inter est in the needs of Oregon potato $ rowers and unjurt traffics have acted as a bar against the industry in this state and especially . so in Oentral Orecon where the growers are so badly handicapped that the best potato grow ing section ia in country may be foroed to retire from toe industry. While other sections are petted and pam pered by the railroads in their efforts to up build the territories along their lines, the same companies which operate in Oregon re fuse to come to the aid of producers of this state. Idaho and the Yakima sections as well as sections in Utah snd Colorado as well as in Califomis. can secure better rates on the railroads to aid traffic, but Oregon growers get no such concessions. In the meantime the low rates given other sections have not only forced other markets to purchase in other states than Oregon, but the fact remains that this state ha been so completely captured by producers of Idaho and Yakima that practically no business is available even in the home market. The excitement in the world'j trade has almost completely subsided for the time being and reactions from the high point have been forced in the price. Owing to the sensations! rise in the East and abroad Monday which the local trade reiusea tn completely louow Because oi. uie fact that values here had been too much out of line previously,-there was but little actual business passing In cash wheat at interior uoints durins til last 24 hours. Some purchases of white club or Western white were reported st interior points on the basis of $1.10 per bushel, tidewater track de livery, but some of the exporters refused to participate as they considered the price out of line. In fact the bullishness in the wheat market was more apparent along the Atlantic coast of the I'ntjsd- States and Canada than in Europe, where war conditions should first be noted. Europe appears to be more calm today and Liverpool was mixed in. character win options higher to lower. Buenos Aires reflected the indaferenc. of exporters snd South Amer ican prices were generally lower. Chicago op tions took the toboggan at the opening. EFFORT MADE TO JECRE LOAV POTATO FRi.lt.HT RATES St Paul. Sept 19. Minnesota agricultural orticials were making efforts today to secure emergency rates on .Northwestern railroads which will enable Minnesota potato growers to market their crops at a profit There is an exceptionally large yield in this territory and an ample demand is reported from the South, but growers complain that specially low rates granted Colorado and Nevada shippers cut Northwestern gnawers off ftpm that market. They assert that millions oC bushels of pota toes will be left ia the ground. This will mean a large loss, as low temperatures prevail and the freeze-up season is at hand. While the railroad strike is only partially settled in this section, many workers are re turning to roads which are not party to ths Chicago agreement About 16,000 will return to the Chicago ic Northwestern, which has signed the peace pact Market for Cotton Goods Firm New York. Sept. 19. The market for cot ton goods was very firm today, reflecting the steady openings of the market for the raw staple. The standard prmt cloth construc tions were in only moderate demand but there was no pressure to sell and prices were fully maintained. Sateens were active and the trend for these goods was higher. Pajama checks, drills and twills all came in for considerable at trntion. The advance in prices in Yokohama and the activity in other Oriental markets tended to check buying in the raw silk market here to some extent although price advances were well maintained. Some profit-taking on silks bought at lower prices. POTATOES ALONti THE San PnMliM Hmi COAST Ssn Francisco. Sept 19. (17. P.) Onions Yellow, per est, 609 78c; green, $1.73 box.
