HIE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, OREGON. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1922. Semnals of JMationa 10 f i i 1 t it i. t t Umpires Help Seals Break V Losing Spell :.'. , Hv llanrM Harts 1 T ' TVTEL.L. the ' Seals . finally crashed vv into-the win column, but in was ' at the expense of some1 very erratie work In the first Inning- on the part of ' Joe Sargent ana ranic uraaiu. i n count was t to 6. the- Beaver fighting all the way ana taking tne worn ii dose ones, but one. " Umpire "Beans" Reardon. who Is about the chestlest umpire the Coast league has ever had l on it payroll, helped the Seals along In the first ta nning by declaring Jimmy O'Connell. $100,000 beauty, safe at the plate. "Beans," a native son" himself, must see bts countrymen get a,long. so O'Connell was called safe. It appears as though "Beans' Is a trifle afraid of Jimmy as the Fourth of July inci- " dent- is still fresh in our minds, and as yet McCarthy has had no official report of "the affair. OETS POOB, srPPOBT Jimmy Middleton, field boas of the Beavers, elected himself to chalk up the third win over the Seals, but faulty support put Middleton on the losing end. Opposing Middleton was Doug McWeeny and the former Sox hurler can thank a couple of close ones and the failure of, the Beaver in field to hold up tn the pinch that he got away" with the game. Middleton gave way to : a ' pinch hitter in sixth and Crumpler finished the game ' The Seals collected four in the first ' Inning. Kelly was safe when Sargent muffed his high bounder. Valla drew a walk and Kamm doubled down the third base line, scoring Kelly. Elli son grounded out and Valla and Kamm ! scored when Brazill threw O'Connell a hopper into the ground in front of Fuhrman. O'Connell took second on the play and when Rhyne grounded out to Poole, O'Connell tore around third and beat it for the plate, but apparently was out in the eyes of everybody but Reardon. "ALL KUXS TJ2fEABIfEI - Not a single run scored in the first was earned by the Seals, but, neverthe less, they counted in the total. Portland came back, with a run in the first after two were out. Brazill and Hale 'singled to left, the former scoring" n Poole's single to right High was called out on strikes. The Beavers had a chance to score In the second on Kilduffs error, a forceout and- singles by -Wolfer and Sargent Middleton, howeveri was caught at the plate on CCbnnell's throw. . :Kamm's eecond hit and Willie only grabbed, four in five times up, and El lison's homer over the left field fence, just 'inside the foul mark, gave tiiz Seals two in the third. Rhyne's boot, a force out and Hale's J home, run' into the left field bleachers, pave Portland two in the fifth, but the Seals came back in the sixth with two on Kelly's single, Valla's double and Kamm's single. Kamm was thrown out trying to stretch his hit : Into a double. TWO ITS EIGHTH " Portland' scored twice In the eighth when Poole doubled and High cow tailed a fast one over the right field' wall. In the. ninth Sargent singled, but' was forced out at second by Bra mlU. who was called out at first on a close play. , It.- appeared as though Brazill had been the pivot throw in the double play by a half a step. It seems funny, that President Mc Carthy switches umpires as much as he-does. The proper combination for Portland this week,, considering the . rivalry between the two clubs, was that , of Casey and Byron, but the Coast executive evidently could noc see anything- but the Reardon-McGrew combination.- which is about the worst in the circuit.
