I Lumber Demand Is Good, but Supplies , Cut by Car Lack ' JLack of cars in which to transport material lor which purchasers are clamoring is the out standing feature of the lumber market, says the American Lumberman - in its weekly re riew. The car shortage is especially acute in the South, where some mills have been making 0 to 70 per cent of their shipments In open top cars, all of which are now diverted to the coal trade through priority orders of the inter state commerce commission. Because of broken stocks and uncertainty as to transportation facilities, many mills in the South are calling lin their salesmen and declining- much of the business ottered. There is a good demand, .both for building lumber ind for special cut ting, the railroads being large buyers of ties, 'timbera and car material, so the market is decidedly jstrong. In tact, buyers are offering premium prices for material on which prompt delivery can be assured. On the west coast the demand for fir lum ber ia strong . with prices advancing. There is in that territory, too. an acute car shortage that is badly handicapping the lumber move ment. The Great Northern railroad hauling from that territory four freight trains, while a short time ago it was hauling onry one. On the other hand, lumber manufacturers say they are receiving only one car where they should have five. Heavy rains in Western Washington have ended the forest fire danger fer and logging camps again are in operation, enabling the mills to get into full production. Railroad equipment througfaoiit the country will be strained to the utmost in the next fortnight irrespective or whether the striking shopmen come to immedi ate agreement with the carriers or not. Em bargoes on freight by the railroads, however, give no signs of spreading, nor will thty be of long continuance, according to telegraphic re ports received within the last 12 hours. I "Railroad revenue is gained by accepting freight for transportation, not by refusing to accept it," was the way one railroad authority snmraed up the situation. Effects on industry and commerce of the embargo announced by four of the Easter roads are not expected to be drastic. Other competing lines expressed today their confidence that they would be able to care for the bulk of the shipments from the West diverted by the embargo. I Talk of a possible food shortage in Eastern cities as a result of the embargo was scouted today by market authorities here. Tbey pointed out that the order did not apply to shipment originating on the lines of tha four carriers which tap producing districts amply able o feed this section. Even the effwt on pTthable fruit ship ments from the Pacific coast which the Erie road has declined to carry has been reduced to a minimum by the move of the Pennsylva nia road to care tor this business. Railroad men made it clean that the Erie would hafe to accept all shipments booked on connectiiig lines before the announcement of the em bargo and that it would be two weeks before these were cleared. By that time, it was bored. tle embargo win be lifted or modified.; Dealers in California fruit here will prob ably suffer the greatest inconvenience as they are accustomed to holding their sales at the Erie piers. A flood of equipment trust certificates, proceeds from which will be used ior purchase of addi tional equipment, will be offered to the in vesting public bj various roads in the next 10 days. St. "Louis. Sept. 13. The recent contracts swarded for equipment by the St. Louis A San Francisco railroad are estimated to involve -an expenditure of $8,000,000. . The Terminals Railroad association proposes to increase its capital from $50,000,000 to $100,000,000 and its bonded debt from $50,000,000 to $100,000,000. Part of this sum will jbe used to refinancing, plans of which are being worked out today. A part also will be devoted to expansion and improvement. ; WHEAT Topeka. Kan.. Sept: 13. Figures, compiled by the Kansas utilities commission show that 1.000.0OO bushels of wheat are awaiting ship ment as the' result of lack of cars. The state is 9 per cent below last year in the number of cars available. All elevators are full and reports are that grain is piled on the ground. PAPER Boston. Sept. 13. Paper mills throughout this section are today running as near to ca pacity as their fuel supplies will permit to take advantage of the increased rates now being paid for print paper. COAL j Greenville. Pa.. Sept IS. Coal production along the Bessemer railroad today is about normal. More than 450 cars a day are being mined. Wholesale dry gdods merchants here declared today that Uieir trade at present is on a larger scale than at any time in many years. Retailers today are far more optimistic and this attitude is being supported by the number of shoppers in their stores. HARDWARE Philadelphia. Sept. 13. A large manufac turer of carpentetr tools here declared today that his plant was operating at 7 5 per cent of capacity and would be increased to 100 Iper cent if he could secure supplies and additional workmen. GRAPES i San Francisco, Sept. 13. High grade wine grapes sold this week st $100 a ton. The or dinary run of grapes is today in less deroknd and prices hsve been hurt to some extent by shipping conditions. WOOL Boston, Sept. 13. The wool market is in creasing in activity and prices are generally firm. Medium wools are especially strung, although all grades are in demand. STEEL Pittsburg. Sept 13. 'Pig iron ii scarce, owing to the tardiness of merchant furnaces in resuming. Bessemer has sold in a small way at $34, valley. Basis cannot be secured today for less than $30 and difficult to find. Pittsburg is drawing foundry iron from Buf falo, the local market being bare. The price is equivalent to $32.50, valley. Sharon, Pa.. Sept. 13. Much better conditions than a year ago are reported by the Western Pine Manufacturers' association. which includes the principal lumber mills of the Inland Empire. It reports that 50 mills of the association cut 147.48fy49 feet during July. The shipments for uie month were 5087 cars of 133,865.219 feet. The cut exceeded the shipments for the month by 13.624,430 feet. For the same month rh 1921 the mt of 48 mills was 110.587.692 feet. S7.0O0.000 less than for July, 1922. Tha ahipmenta Were 2944 cars of 77.24S.274 feet. 66. 0OO.000 less than last August. For July, 1921, the cut exceeded the shipment by 83,344,818 feet.
