Thomas. . Thomas appeared in Superintendent Grout's office Tuesday -with a bis vol ume of school architectural literature, gotten out by J. J. Donovan, an archi tect of Oakland. CaL Most of the pictures were of Cali fornia school buildings, many of the cottage type. This type consisted of cement, walls with eight inch base and st inch top, with red tile roofs, and, according to Donovan, were construct ed at a cost between $5000 and $6000 a room. "I am going to recommend to the board Wednesday night," declared Thomas to Grout and Director Martin, "that we investigate this type of a building, and if it is true that it can be built for not more than $6000 a room, that rrt'. use the plans for our new elementary schools, wherever it is - feasible. "Edmondstone insisted that the cement wasn't suitable for this climate, but I find it is, although stucco won't do. Superintendent Odell claims that such a building cannot possibly b con structed at $6000 a doom, but Dono van says it can and was, and I believe it is worth investigating." Thomas, however, is not sure that he wants a cottage type building at liolladay. Although the prospectus is sued by the board preceding the bond election called for a cfcttage type build ing, immediately after the election Thomas voted for t. to story building similar to Shattuck. In this he was upheld by Director Woodward, who insists that a cottage txpe building is more expensive than a two story one, because of additional roof and floor space and ground for a eite. Thomas does not believe that four blocks in the Holladay district is suf ficient ground upon which to spread a 24 room cottage type building and leave enough space for playgrounds. But, in general, Thomas is inter ested In 4.he cement walled, tiled roof, cottage building of the Donovan type. Snake Possessing Two Heads Found At Metzger Station Now comes a two-headed snake to add to the list of some of Dame Na ture's freaks. Victor Mason of Metzger. Or., while - w alking along a path near the Metzger station, spied a two-headed snake crawling across the path in front of him. Mason, though not a drinking man, was near disillusioned, but he pro ceeded to investigate and found it to be alive, with each head seemingly able to function independent of the other. The snake is about five inches leng and of the. garter snake variety. Mason says the snake eats with both heads, and at times, when one head teems to have had sufficient food, the " other keeps on eating, and a struggle will then ensue for possession of the body, each head trying to go in a dif ferent direction. School Swimming; Tank Hours Named By Director Krohn Swimming schedules for- the tanks at Couch and Shattuck schools have been announced by Robert Krohn, su pervisor of physical training, as fol lows : Couch school: Girls from 2:30 to 0 :30 p. m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and from 9 a. m. to 12 Saturday. Women from 7 to 10 p. ra. Monday aad Tuesday. Boys from 2 :30 to 5 :3ft p. m. Thursday and Fri day and from 2 to 4 p. m. Saturday. . Men, from 7 to 10 p. m. Thursday and Friday. Shattuck school : Boys fro'm 2 :30 to 6 :30 p. m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and from 9 a. m. to 12 Saturday. Men from 7 to 10 p. m. Monday and Tuesday. Girls from 2 :30 to 5 :30 p. m. Thursday and Fri day and from 2 to 4 p. m. Saturday. Women from 7 to 10 p. m. Thursday and Friday. I I Lumber Kail Bate Equalization to Be Effective Monday Equalization of rail rates on lumber moving to middle western points be came effective Monday foj lowing re fusal of tphe interstate commerce com mission to suspend the tariff amend ment upon petition of the West Coast Lumbermen's association and other organizations of the Northwest. The new supplement to the" tariff makes common rate to St. Paul, Minneapolis, Omaha and other Mis souri river crossings. Rates to Omaha and the southern points formerly was 66 cents snd to the Twin Cities 60 cents. The West Coast association asked suspension of the advance to the northern cities and continuance of the reduction to the southern points.
