in the northern Plain region. In other parta
of the country the pressure is moderately high,
the highest readings being in the central Plains
states. Precipitation has occurred on the ex
treme northern Jtocky mountain slope, in parts
of Texas and New Mexico, and over a belt
reaching from Illinois to Louisiana. TUe
heaviest rainfall reiwrted was 1.52 inches at
St. Louis, Mo. Cool weather prevails through
out most of the Middle West, while in' the
Atlantic and Pacific states sod the northern
Kooky mountain region the temperature is
above normal. Temieratures of loo degrees or
higher occurred Sunday in Ariaona. the in
terior of California and Southern Oregon.

Road to Seaside Shortened Automo
bile tourists between Portland and Sea
side will be Interested to learn that
the city council of Astoria has decided
to pave Eighth street from the end
of the present paving: on Irving- avenue
to the summit of the hill which rises
between the Columbia and Young river.
This is the most direct route through
Astoria to Seaside and the Clatsop
beaches and will eliminate the long
drive around Smith's Point. The Skip
anon cut-off has already been com
pleted and Is in usei cutting- off two
or inore miles by way of Warrenton,

Concrete Paving Completed Garrow
& Ward, Portland contractors, have
completed laying a mile of concrete
paving on the main West Side highway
just south of Hood River. . The paving
will be ready for use when apple haul
ing traffic begins. Approximately
250,000 boxes of apples will move into
Hood River over the new paving, all
of which is IS feet wide, except 900
feet at the immediate edge of the
city, .which is 18 feet. The new road's
cost was about $25,000, and will be
added ' to as market road funds are
available.
Ileal Closed for Gravel The state
highway commission, through the ef
forts of J. M. Devers.T attorney for the
department, has closed a contract with
C, Mtnsnger, owner of the Star Gravel
company of Portland, for the delivery
Of approximately 20,000 cubic yards of
gravel for use on the Mount Hood loop
highway, at a cost of 10 cents per
cubic yard. The company is reported
to have previously demanded 40 cents
a yard for the gravel.

Appointed National Censor Mrs.
Cora McTaggart of Eugene has just
received notification that she has been
appointed by Will H. Hays, recently
'empowered czar of the motion picture
world, as one of a board of 12 mem
bers who will act as a national commit
tee of censors of moving picture films.
Mrs. McTaggart was at one si me a
member of the censor board of Port
land and has been a resident of Eugene
for a number of years. She will leave
November 15 for New York to assume
her duties.
Big increase la State Tax Tax rec
ords at the courthouse In Vancouver
show that while the tax levy for all
county purposes, has gained but 8 per
cent In the last three-, years, the state
levy has increased 47 per cent. The
county levy in 1920 was 20.82 mills and
three years later was 22 mills. In the
same period the county current expense
fund has gained- but 854,000, while the
money raised by state taxation in the
county has increased $122,000. State
and county taxes combined have raort
than doubled in the seven years since
1915.

Pacific Northwest district of the vet
erans' bureau were awarded total dis
ability government compensation call
ing for payment of $80 a month or
more during the hospital clean-up carn
paing conducted this year throughout
the country by the bureau, according
to the final report in this district by
L. C. Jesseph, Northwest district man
ager. Of this number, 38 veterans
were given permanent disability rating.

Norman Gardner first protested that
they had been on a little fishing trip
and that 20 cases of , bonded whiskey
ii. their automobile was strictly for
personal refreshment, he and Louis
Briggs, both of Portland, pleaded guilty
before a United States commissioner
when they were arraigned on liquor
funning charges at Spokane last
Wednesday. They were held in 1500
bonds for sentence later.
Furlong Is Hosored Lieutenant Col
onel C. W. Furlong, author and lecturer,
now in Pendleton, has been notified
by the war department that he Is one
of the officers to be selected for a
special course for the reserve officers
in the army war college at Washington,
D. C. The course is designed to pre
pare officers for general staff work.
Only five reserve officers will be or
dered to active duty to attend this
coures, which is one of the most Im
portant offered in the army.

Patrolman McCutcheon to that district
late Sunday night and landed Howard
Benedict, 17, the son of F. M. Benedict,
No. 50 East Eighth street, and Charles
Curtis, 17, Page apartments, in the
county jail. McCutcheon said he found
the youths thoroughly under the influ
ence of liquor. They were held for the
juvenile court,' while efforts are being
made to ascertain who supplied the
liquor.

More Money for Schools The state
land department turned over " to the
state treasurer during the month of
August $140,544.38, according to a re
port prepared last week by G. G.
Brown, clerk of the state land board.
The turn-overs included : Common
school fun, $131,461.64 ; university fund,
$4090.11 ; agricultural college fund,
$542.65 ; rural credits fund, $449.38.
Police Raid "Party" E. E. Mas tick,
arrested by the police early Sunday
in a vacant house at -No. 600 East 36th
street, was held on a charge of disor
derly conduct. According to Mastlck's
statement to the police, a number of
persons, including himself,' conducted
a "party" in the vacant house. A win
dow was broken, several glasses were
smashed and the telephone was dam
aged. Fire Damage Slight A small fire in
the Jewelry store of M. H. Packous,
No. 275 Morrison street, brought out
the fire department Sunday afternoon,
but resulted in little damage. The fire
started in an oii-soaked mop in the
store, and fire officials believe it was
started by spontaneous combustion.

are busy in the vicinity of his home, J.

north, reported to police Sunday. He
said plants and shrubs have been
tolen from his gardens and those of

at the emergency hospital for a severe
cut in his foot which he received while

stepped on a piece of broken glass and

Johnson, proprietor of a gfocery store

police Sunday that $80 had been stolen
from his cash' register while three of

Police say it is an Inside job, as an

open the register without attracting the
attention of at least one of the clerks.
