Coast geodetic survey steamer Pioneer Will leave in a few days for the Pacific. poagt. The vessel, one of a fleet of three, the others being the Discoverer (Lnd the Guide, will be detailed to duty to he Pacific Coast and Alaska. I The Pioneer, representing an ex fcenaiture of nearly $1,000,000, will en- jragfe in special survey work in-L.an-jfornia during the fall months, with at- Los Angeles and later will pro to Seattle, where she will outfit for Alaska. -In eauipment the Pioneer represents the last scientific word in hydrograph- ; Ic surveying. The combined fleet will - lettable the coast survey to do four times the work formerly done. The Pioneer and her sister ships werje built by the navy in 1918 for mine lay iing and were used in connection with the removal of the North Sea mine barrage. i The Pioneer is 180 feet in length. J IS ieet 6 inches breadth and draft of 10 feet. -has a displacement of 10,000 tons. . The motive power, is a triple ex pansion steam engine of 1400 indicated horiepower. Two Scotch boilers are fedjby fuel oil, with storage capacity of 2000 gallons. The boat equipment consists of two navy 32 foot , launches, two 24 foot whaleboats and two dingles. The vessels will carry 11 officers and a crew of 53 men.
