FRIDAY,: AUGUST 23, 1822.
-THE TRIUMPH OF. WISDOM
. t By S. K.K16CT ' -'.'
CERENE upon my way I fjro,?
. By s6 old -fashioned fear deterred;
j My reason tells me, and I know i
That signs and portents are absurd;
4 I do not keep an amulet,
No superstition haunts my mind;
I'm far too wise to be upset
I -By quackery of anyjind.
, TTS long: since I have been afraid
r-X To pass a graveyard late at niffht;
If salt Is spilled I'm not dismayed,
For why should that bring: on a fight?
No rabbit's foot or lucky stone
Afeans anything: at all to me?
i Still, I've a prejudice, I own,
I Against thirteen and twenty-three.
e T AM not one of those who fear
That Friday may be full of harm;
: It always makes me smile to hear
; That fortune lurks within a charm;
f How foolish to think that or this "
May brine a man good luck or ill;
i I own up to no prejudice
Against a nice two-dollar bill.
s T JDO not fear to walk below
: A ladder set against a wall;
X let lost horseshoes lie, and go
Ahead, with no alarm at all,
, But I've a prejudice I'll keep,
I think, until my dying day
Against black cats that slyly creep
' Across my path, and slink away.

Electric Concerns ,
Discuss Extension
And Other Issues
Olympla, TOuli, Aug. 25. That there
always has existed discrimination be
tween ' electric companies regarding
electric line extensions to the state was
the concensus of opinion of the repre
sentatives of JO electric companies who
have been meeting with Hance Cleland,
supervisor of utilities, during the last
two days In an effort to establish uni
form 'regulations covering this phase
of the company's work.'
Each company has Its own policy in
governing line extensions. It was stated,
and there have been many complaints
and much trouble in adjusting indi
vidual -cases.
Charles Fleming, mayor of Spokane.
and James Uehraty. Spokane corpora
tion counsel, asked that a provision
covering a refund charge on line ex
tensions be included. Supervisor Cle
land assured them that a refund charge
would be provided in the rules.
The suggestion of Herbert Flagg.
chief engineer for the department, that
the utilities should provide one pole,
ISA feet of wire and that the rest
should be paid for by the purchaser,
was taken under consideration.
Present at the hearing were repre
sentatives from Wenatchee, Yakima,
Walla Walla, Bremerton. Chehalis,
Vancouver, Tacoma and Seattle.
