were reached fa both

The market today bad the larrceat and moat
central advance of any dav trace to exununa-
IrJon of the active speculative movement of
April and May. Trading did not reach the
volume of three months ago, but the tansN
more confident than at any ume si
then. This iucreasina activity aa prices i
I might hare been set down to one er all of
I three causes, either a large participation ty
the outside speculative public, a mora vigor-
lous effort by the Wall street pools or aa
I increased investment demand.
Foreign Exohanee Advance
I German marks gaining. The recovery ia mark
Iand franca might easily hare been nothing
mora than one of ihe familiar periods of
I profit taking by successful abort sellers, inci-
Ident to any rreat decline. But it was
I eonable to suppose that it had some connection
I with the reported proposal by the members
of the reparations commission to the Berlin
I government to offer a counter plan to that
submitted by the French premier to the London
I conference.
While at one state or another the majority
I of stocks were drawn into the upward
ment there were some exceptions. Last
I announcement of the merger details appeared
to bare taken the speculative incentive away
I from the independent steel stocks. The coppers
did little or nothing and shipping stocks were
I somewhat depressed by the signs of increasing
Iccmpetiuon in the ocean passenger trade which
Lai been depended on daring the slack business
period of the last 12 months to offset the loss
in TlKgUU
Buying of the raaway equipments was clear-
Ily enough founded on the anticipation wt
with the termination of the strike and with
reads able to raise money Quite easily' on sew
l securities there would be a rtHh to baud up
the depleted stocks of cars and locomotives.
Witli the prospective settlement of the strikes
the forthcoming July traffic reports will not
be aa interesting as they would have been
week ago. It doubtful if they nave any
effect at all upon the market. Railway stocks
and bond in their remarkable upturn in the
last few dare have (imply bean discounting the
extraordinary earnings foreshadowed daring the
next few months, when the roads in addition
to the heavy grain movement will be called
upon to handle the pent-up coal tonnage and
the unusual shipments ia other lines that have
been delayed by the strikes.

HAB VESTING OF WALLA WALLA
PRCSE8 TO START SOON
Walla Walla, Wash.. Ana. 21. Rsrreariiur
ef prunes startad in the Walla Walls valley to
day. Three cars were shipped from Freewatef,
Or., to Chicago and New Tork City and to
points in Missouri and Kansas. The opening
price on prunes ia announced as 840 a ton.
Estimates at the office of the H. N. Denni-
son Fruit company ot Freewatar placed the out
put of the Walla Walla, valley prune orchards
at 800 cars, or 810 cars leas than the crop ef
lat year as shown by the figures ef John B.
Wiley, district horticulturist. Wile eattssabsL
however, that the crop this year will run be
tween 400 and 60O car.
- Fruit packers in this district say that the
price of prunes will undoubtedly drop t a fig
ure much lower than that ef 830, the closing
price of last year, despite " the short crop in
this section. They point oat that Idaho grow
ers will coma onto the market immediately
following the close of the harvest here, with
1500 cars, and that Eastern buyers are aatici
pating this. They look for no trouble' frost
die railroads in getting the fruit to the mar
kets. .
Because of the increasing acreage, official
of the Dentiison company say that next year's
crop will be three or four times that ef this
year.
