1G THE OREGON. DAILY JOU RNAL, PORTLAND, OREGON. TUESDAY, AUGUST 15, 1922. VfflO WILL BUY BIG INTERESTS OF 7 NORTHCUFFE? ' PUBLISHES LAST ASTICLE The tut written work of Viscoujit Northcllffe was published in thin country '. by The Journal through articles furnished by the United -News, immediately after the famous British publisher had made a trip, incognito, through Germany. - The articles were written in Switzerland, where Northcllffe had gone for a rest following his trip. : They were entitled ."Incognito to Germany." It was in the. midst of writing these articles that North cliff e was stricken with the illness I which resulted in -his death. (By United Newsl London, Aug- IS. While- Englishmen and women in all walks of life mourjn his loss and newspapers throughout the world publish articles of profound a , preclation of his work and accomplish ments. Fleet street, the nerve center of British newspaperdom, is now speculating as to the possible disposi tion of more than 100 publications con trolled by Viscount Northcliffe. who died at his home Monday after an extended illness. TIMES IS MAIN ISSUE Chief interest centers in the disposi tion of ihe London Times.". It has been reported for some time that the repre sentatives of the Walters family, founders of the paper and still heavy stockholders, have been seeking means of financing the purchase of North cliffe's interest. Northclifr. nas been an unrelenting foe of Premier Lloyd George since shortly beore the Versailles .peace conference.- It was Northcliffe who brought about the overthrow of the Asquith government in the midst of the war and the elevation of Lloyd George. It was Northcliffe who stood staunchly behind Lloyd George throughout the war. In addition to throwing his full weight into the main tenance of ' morale at home through his newspapers Northcliffe directed the government's work of shattering the morale of the German people .through propaganda. The allied conference, which brokeJ up in failure in London on the same day Northcliffe died, found Lloyd George maintaining' the same general position he has held to German repara tions, as against the French, who harre long had the support of the North cliffe press.- The cause of the break between Northcliffe and Lloyd George has never been disclosed. From among those opposed to Northcliffe have come stories that he demanded and was refused a place on the British peace mission to Versailles. From other sources, that Lloyd George sought to dictate the policies of Nor-thcliffe's papers. Senators Urged to Prevent Removal Of XL S. Fighting a desperate losing, battle for his life, Dan Teats, an Indian, was drowned at Sheran's Falls on the Deschutes river Monday, while spearing eels. After failing into the swiftly rushing waters the: Indian was carried to an eddy at the foot of the fish ladder. He clung to grass at the edge of the precipitous cliff for several minutes, while friends looked on ' from above and endeavored vainly to aid him. Presently the grass gave away , and he' went down. The body was carried a - mile downstream and presently lodged oh a rock," where it was discov ered by an S. P It S. section foreman. He summoned ' help, but when men went to the scene the body had dis appeared again. In the meantime Coroner C. N. Bur get was summoned and he went to the scene in- the afternoon, but the body bad not been recovered. : Moonshiner Foils Tip by Boy Scouts Pendleton. Aug. 15. Somewhere in Umatilla county is a moonshiner with little regard for the Boy Scouts of America, as represented by the Pendle ton patrol. Several days ago the scouts left for their annual outing at Emi grant Springs. During their ramifica tions in- the adjacent territory they found a still and mash. A messenger was sent back to tell the scoutmaster of the find. He notified the sheriff's office here, but when the officials reached the shack where the scouts had found the outfit the still and mash had taken wings. Members of the local Rotary club went out Monday and brought the amateur sleuths back home. Committee of 5 to Manage. A complete investi gation of the rates, rules, charge-and regulations of the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph company on the commis sion's own motion, is provided for 'in a resolution introduced before the pub lie service commission Monday by Commissioner H H. Corey. The reso lution fixes the time and place for the proposed formal hearing and : in vestigation at the ' courthouse, Port land, October 17, 1922. No action was taken on the resolu tion by the commission at today's meeting. Commissioners McCoy and Kerrigan taking the matter under ad visement. Neither had any comment to make on the proposal. Corey, the author of the resolution. refused to support the Kerrigan res-: lution providing for withdrawal of the commission's answer to the Dundans suit.- which action was designed to automatically restore to subscribers of the Pacific company in this state the rates in effect prior to the commis sion's order of February 28i 1921. BECALL ELECTION CITED The Investigation as provided for in his resolution, Corey insists, is the only proper procedure open to the commission I in the telephone rate case. The resolution, which is addressed to the Pacific, company, calls atten tion to the fact that 18 months have elapsed since the issuance of the former rate order. Further attention is called to the fact that "popular disapproval of such in creased rates has been demonstrated at a recent recall election held on May 19, 1923, at which time two members of the public service commission were recalled and new members elected in their stead, said members having been pledged to do all in their power to se cure a reduction In such telephone rates." HOLDS INQUIRY PROPER Corey also points out that complaints against existing telephone rates have been filed with the commission and declares that an investigation by the commission on its own motion "has de termined that sufficient grounds exist to warrant a hearing being held to de termine whether each, any or all , of the existing rates, charges, tolls, regu lations, practices and service of your company in the furnishing of such intrastate, long distance, local ex change or accessorial telephone service within the state of Oregon are now AMD Home of Service new Home provides a Home RACEY'l like Chapel one of largest in the Northwest and a beautiful Family Room.
