WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1922. IS THE OREGON DAILY. JOURNAL, PORTLAND, OREGON. - V r GENERAL DISPOSITION OF STOCK MARKET FAVORABLE DESPITE POOR STRIKE OUTLOOK CURRENT EVENTS HAVE NO EFFECT wii day's de -r- ...... JBTv' i hAI NEW YORK BOND Reported by The Jomraal TRANSACTIONS s Wall Street Burets f By Stuart P. West StmL New York. An. 2. Stocks excellent account of themselves in to iling. The cist ofnw with a bear- in- an KKsnUes. lti - cludinc the railroads' refusal to concede anything- in the eon tent over shopmen's senjrtity rights, and the coal operators de clining to meet with union leaders, sad nmcif less effect than many expected in forc ing prices down in esrly transactions. In' bet, professional trad era wbo sold stocks short -were able to bnng about only frac tional declines for the men part, and when they songht to make repurchases, offerings were very scarce- New Trrk Central, after receding a point, went forward sharply, more than the distance Inet. touching a new high level for several years, ahote 98. This abrupt reversal of initial tendencies, together with a rise of 4 points in Norfolk &. Western, helped steady the entire last, and in the fore noon both rails as rndurtrials were a little higher on the average than on Tuesday. Undertone Is Good The market showed quite plainly that cur rent difficulties cenferei in strikes and com modity price movement were held of less im portance hy invsu.ri and speculators for the lonirer future than jm-- broad industrial facts. There was Mist a. little evidence of liquidation today as th-re had heen a: any previous time .during- the strikes. Quite naturally new buy in of the mor stable sort win very light, for anyone knews that the complete cost of the strike cannot yet be measured, but various traders found, as they had before, that they could not- steer out large efferines. Coal Situation Serious Of todav's strike developments the more dis turbing ltetn from a market point of view was perhaps the coal operators- assertion that they would not deal with the national union, but Insisted upon regional settlements- This attitude carried its own inference nf the pro longed controversy, for the Vnited Mineworkers of America fcr 17 weeks haic held their, men well in hand. The Ktock market does r.ot minimize proof that business is pressing hetriiy upon the road!. Carloadings of general merchandise in the week of July 22. when the shopmen's strike had been In effect more than a fortnight, reached the large aggreirste of TC5.84 cars, quite the largest on record for tly se'sion and within a shade of the great movement of freight in Oc tober 1920. This total excluded coal. A the merchandise flow was 1401 cars larger than the week before, which was close to a ' record also, it is clear that industrial growth continued past midsummer under great handi capa. The sale at auction of the Stuti stock, held collateral for the debts of Allan A. Ryan ".. brought 20 a share, with George I,. Burr of the Guaranty Trut compahv taking the largest block, a lot of 11.104 1-3 shares. Two hundred shares of Pneumatic-Tool sold at 871 a ahare. and $3 60,000 8 per cent notes of the Continental Candy company brought 10 per cent of their face vain. The trend of sentiment in the steel industry was well de picted in the weekly reviews, which suggested that conditions would be worse before they were better. The Steel corporation's plants are reported "back to 70 rer cent of capacity operation, in contrast with 7 6 per cent during June, and independent miLU have fallen through the 60 per cent level. Five weeks ago they closed to the Steel corporation's ratio. Tlie stock market not materially affected today by considerations reflected from the strike situation. Trading was exceedingly dull An early reaction was quickly followed by a recovery which put the general price level at a point closely corresponding to Tuesday s close. Rather depressing news Irom the steel in dustry and a new cut of 25 cents a barrel in Mid-Continent Crude Petroleum were practically ignored as market influences. Wall Street, Sew Tork, Aug. I The pablleatioa. of tee British aot on the qaesUoa of later-alHea indebted- was the sabjeet of fresh dlscatsloa to day repardlajj the complicated state of European Haaacea ' thu had aa ad verse effeet on the martet for the ex teraal loans of those oomatries -which claim to he relying- apoa the fBlfilmeBt of German iademalty obHyattoas to help them oat of their dlfflenltles. Moreover, the sharp drop la marks at the outset of the day was another depressing Influence and French, Bel gian and tfther foreign secnrtles, traded in on the "ew York stock ex change, plainly reflected the concern over the sitnation which Is so keenly feit. French g-oTernment 8s sank over a point to below par and were not far from their lowest price of the year. They were selling about points from the top figure of 1122. The "Vi per cent French bond declined almost a point from Tuesday's final. The 8 per cent bonds of the BsTglaa lean lost over a point. This drop was natural in view of Belgium's prior claims on German reparations. Other Belgian govern ment securities, the Paris, Lyons Med. 6s, Seine s and the French mu nicipals all worked lower, and the Prague JVis were at their bottom price. The United Kingdom SVss and the Dominion of Canada bonds were firm in marked contrast to the weak ness of French and other European issues. In fact the dominion of Can ada s'is of 1929 rose to their highest for the year, fnited States govern ment bonds kept fairly steady and. at their top figure of the day, the Liberty SVfes touching a new high. Railroad bonds generally were firm with several points of strength. The rise of Xorfolk t tVestern convertible 6s was the most conspicuous and ac companied a jump in the road's stock. Other convertible bonds of represen tative railroads were strong and re flected as did the shares the confi dence that the railway strike was Bearing its close. Delaware & Hudson convertible 6s, "ew Haven 6s, Penna. 7s, Chicago & Eastern I1L, 5s, Denver and Bio Grand refunding Ss, Northern Pae. Ss, Southern Pacific refunding 4s. Seaboard Airline 6s and the Missouri Kansas t Texas issues all gained ground. In the Industrials the American Su gar 6s were a feature at a new top for the year Punta Allegre Sugar 7s also advanced and the Saks & Co. 7s con tinued their rise to a point around par. New York. Aug. 2.- Following is an offl- j rial list of all bonds traded in on the New i York Hock exchange today with price and j sales up to and including the cloee of the market. V. Shannon New Oran, Ang. 2. Tile price of the cotton crop has bad s stimulating effeet on business, as it has given assurance to the South that the planters will get an adequate price for all the cotton they can produce. As aeen here it is a serious jwohlem whether the South can produce all that is needed. Confidence in the situation has been reflected principally In increased activity in building and in real estate sales. Houses for about 1600 families have been completed here so tar this year arid the number of bnlkline nrmit ill i.nwl indicates that there will be no slackening of mctivirv oeiore winter. f Architects are now working on specifica tions which will mean expenditure of $15,000. 000 in addition to the projects now under construction. Reconstrnctinn of levees dam aged hy spring floods, and work on the roads is giving employment to thousands in this territory. The outlook for every crop grown in Louis iana is better than it was a year ao. Rice has already begun to move and this is having a stimulating effeet on buying in the country sections and 011 wholesale trade in the cities' The fnut situation has bee improved by embargoes on the shipment of certain varieties, which, however, now have been removed. Its yearly output has increased from 50,000 bags to more than 1,000,000 bags of refined sugar, an increase of 1900. With sur plus earnings it retired during the past six years $2,000,000 of its preferred stock. A comparison of assets to indebtedness is al-C ,most 4 to 1 and current assets to current liabjJi ities, a ratio of more than 11 to 1. Net earn ings averaged 1uring the past 10 years $l,142f 000, eq iva' t to more than 4l2 ' ': the in terest, riquireme-ts of the $3,500,000 first mort gage fifteen-year 7 sinking fund gold bonds which comprise the entire funded debt. The company either owns or controls through subsidiaries se ;n fully equipped, modern su gar refineries in California, Colorado and Wyo ming. The company is one of the big sugar beet de fining companies of the United States. Its management is nationally recognized as being of the best. Sinking fund provisions for buying in $200,000 annually of the issue at the market, up to 105, or by calling "by lot" at 105, makes these bonds remarkably attractive considering the great se curity, the successful history and the. current high interest yield, 7 without deduction for normal federal income tax except in excess of 2. Seven per cent is the minimum income. Those called "by lot" at 105 will produce a very much greater return.
