CURRENT PRICES ON COTTON
GOODS DBLITERIES FIRM
Sr Tsrk, July 21. Tha strength of the
market for cotton gonda was reflected in the
firmness with which seDers met bids for future
delivery in the standid print cloths. Current
pnees en spot, deliveries were firmly main
tained and the amount of coeds which can be
obtained at these figures seemed to be limited
In print cloths the narrower constructions
aeamed to be ia best demand. Some weights
of sheetings showed fractional' advances from
early weak levels aad a fair volume of business
was done by Jobbers and the bag trade. Ps
iama. checks for future delivery were strong and
some business was done in sateens and other
like sorts.
The fact that buying for future delivery has
started . in the silk market was aa even more
encouraging sign today than the strength in
pneea. Most purchases seemed to be for eon
sumption rather than specula don.
WOOL TRADE CONFINED TO

Fear of Strike

Chicago, July 21. Wheat was stress at

fact that exporters are beginning to show alarm

their needs, scared many of the aborts la the
nearby deliveries into covering. After this
baying was finished, the baying newer seemed
te give oat and tha support waa needed in
both September and December to prevent a
decline. There was selling by cash boasts
against purchases of wheat ia the country and
this pressure was felt. Locals' sold on the

SELLING PRESSURE CONTINUES
IN EARLY COTTON TRADING
New York, July 21. A continuation of
selling pressure in the cotton market today,
notwithstanding unfavorable weather in -the
Southwest and numerous bullish crop advices,
caused weakness and a forenoon decline of
about 20 points. October waa the weakest
position on aggressive selling by local traders
who were buying later positions at the same
time.
While the rain areas in the Eastern belt,
where most of the weevil reports have origi
nated lately waa smaller than yesterday, the
Southwest was still has; and dry and local
map readers professed to see no prospects in
the barometer lines for ar.y immediate change
from thee unfavorable conditions.
New York, July 21. Traders in .the cot
ton market today seemed to pay little heed to
weather and the good crop news. From be
ginning to end selling pressure was in evi

Foreign markets reflected some Improvement
in the price of option wheat, but there was
practically no activity here for foreign ea-
eotnrt durtng the day. TJVecpoo! was higher
at both the opening and eioatng, wmie at
Baenoe Aires the market reflected steadiness,
aceordina to Initial renorta.
Milling interests here continue to tight for
the better class Bluestem wheat and sales
in the Big Bend are still being reported aa high
as 81-25 per bushel, -ConneR, although this
is an extreme value. The general bida here
for the better class " Bluestem and Baart are
a room! I1.IO01.S3 ser bushel.
Such prices appear to be paid by millers
only ' for select lota. There appears to be
a disposition among them to gather up certain
lota and a premium of fie to lOe a bushel
over orodinary quotations appear to be gladly
paid for saeh offerings.
Little activity is shown for club wheat at
the moment, export interests having bought
tneir early requirements on contract, while
Europe and Japan are not in the market for
additional stocks at the moment,
With wheat prices held at their present level
there, appears practically no chance for any
lower! n of flour values.

DRUG USE DISEASE
Oregon City, July 21.- Canon W.
H. Bliss of Seattle addressed the Epis
copalian conference at Gladstone park
on "The Narcotic Evil? Ita Curse, and
Its Cure." . He is the father of the
White Cross league.
The so-called drug- habit is not a
habit, but a disease, he said. He ad
vanced the theory that tha taking; of
the drug sets up a natural antidote in
the body. This antidote, the speaker
said, demands the constant use of the
drug to counteract it, and It ia the an
tidote and not the drug- that causes
the craving. . i i -
Canon Jttliss said that about 000
addicts live in Portland, according to
ponce figures, ana aoout 20.000 people
are engaged in the narcotio traffic,
The summer conference will close
this evening with a business meeting
and election of officers.
