BREAK IN FRENCH. EXCHANGE AND HIGH RECORD IN LIBERTY BONDS FEATURE. STOCKS RAILWAY SHARES a 4 L iA NOT IN DEMAND - - - i If ttmn P. wt . New .- Tors, July 5. .Interest in today" markers Uy nwOJy In directions , oua ' tlie atorlc excliange. Tlie stock mark bad not Dora seaawre ai any. ataee . to Ue tamt of ,a nation wide strike. It m therefore not railed niwn to be at all en thusiastic eboRt de er iopsaenia over the holiday which iiwii eated that the railway shopmen woo Id bare to co it alone with out the rapport of the other onions, with the stigma of beins out lawed by tlie ratted Mate labor board and with , abaolotelj no popular tTrapatby. In a word, the railway labor trouble practi cally disappeared from conkleration alto zether. There waa a little ' Suyloa In railway shares right at the opeurae, bat It bad only slight elleet. and In the- subsequent trading, railway issues were neglected. The principal ejasoiie of an nntmportant dsy were a rather 'sharp break in French ex elienee, a swift, reaction after Monday's rise tn cotton options and the establishment of new hitfh records In some of the Liberty bonds. At 8:20 franc exchange was down nearly IMc front t the April high and bad undergone all bat jnuarter cent ot the entire year's rise. French financial writers set the decline down to IoliticaUcatues, and they are doubtless correct. The 'data bearing npon the economic situation proper is -unquestionable ' more favorable. The latent foreicn trade furure continued to show a ciose -approximation between exports and im port, while the revival in home industries - is attested cy what observers declare to be the complete disappearance of the reemployment problem in France. But the danger lies al ways in tke political game being played with such severity in the matter ot German repara tions tbat Germany will fall down in her cash payments. It is this danger wltich the drop in francs has been apprehending, all tlie way from the hii of 9.37 two and a half months ago. to tlie 8 20 reached today. The reaction in the cotton market was not surprising after tlie extraordinary reception given the government report Monday. With all allowances given the department's figures being -under actual figures a jump of 150 nointa in lew? than two hours was plainly overdoing things. In the calmer view prevailing there was less sugsfntion ot the possibility of a short age than there was when the forecast of only an eleven million bale crop was first put out. There was an hour or so of fairly general strength in the stock market. Then the move ments became very uneven as between indi vidual issues. A genuine smash occurred in Mexican seaboard stocks, listed en the curb exchange, following a story that salt water had sppeared in the company's wells. : . Inasmuch as Mexican Petroleum, has an important stake In tlie same territory the shares of this company and the Pan-Americans were heavily sold. The break in the Mexican Oils pot a further check npon further operations for the rise in other lrt of' the list, but did not bring about much selling. - . Today's dealings in storks settled one thing clearly that the dullness at the close of last week, "extending i:p to Monthly's session, was not due simply to the coming of the holiday. With -this over, business was not much more active than it was before. The fact is that r- the market, baring had its big sjieeularion of the spring and its' proper amount of readjust ment during the early part of June, has set fed down into tfie familiar inertia of the early' summer. In past years this .dull spell -has often lasted through July, to be broken m August, at which time the crop results will be more clearly forecast and it will be pos sible to. hm a better lineup in the autumn trade. An official of Mexican Petroleum was quot ed as denying that the company's wells were involved in the alt water trouble, but despite this denial the selling continued in Mexican oils.- Standard Oil and other -.American oils were for the most pa'rt firm and some of them strong, hile t'opper was the strongest of the copper group, and Consolidated ias and Colum bia Was were leaders among the public utilities. Steel stocks' did little one way or. the other, doubtless ref lecting the uncertainty which the weekly trade reviews referred to as the result of 'the coal strike and the question of future supplies., Today's stock market, with' two or. three noteworthy exceptions, was strong. There was little lijfht, however, to the- trading, which was vtaftost as quiet as before the holiday. The general list held up well against the test of a sharp - break in the Mexican Oil stocks and tiie close was' very steady, with gafhs pre- - dominating on the day.
