Is Nearly $75,000
Canyon city, June 28. Fire, which
virtually wiped out the business sec
tion of the town of Monument, near
uere, ypsterday morning, caused losses
ggregating about $75,000. Already
jlns are being made for rebuilding.
Heaviest losses were sustained by
I. J. Semas, general store and pastime,
,22.000 ; W. T. Hamilton. $18,000 ; tele
phone office. $3000 : garage. Beame &

Williams. $3000; Karl Swick. dwelling

Kverything was burned except the
City hotel, which was protected by a
shade- tree. Hamilton stated he would
rebuild and replace his stock. Semas
left, while the fire was still smoking,
for Heppner after a load of supplies.
The town has no water system-and no
means of fighting the fire. Most of
(he losses were partially covered :by
insurance.

Thirty lusty babies, each escorted
by a proud mother. were guests at a
j party given by Vr. Viola May Coe
; at the Coe Maternity home Tuesday
afternoon. The baby party is an an
nual event given by Dr. Coe for the
babies born at the hospital, and is one
party where the babies are especially
- invited and hold the center of the
stage. Little J. Arthur Moore almost
missed the party, he was the youngest
member, being just 24 hours old. The
6-months-old twins, lenn and Dor
tha Price, behaved very nicely and en
joyed the party thoroughly. Miss
Jean Cross, a maid of three summers,
entertained very prettily with three

Are Eeported Sold
Purchase of 5'J homesites in Pied
mont addition, announced today by J.
R. Haight, constitutes one of the most
important transactions In residence
property during recent months. The
property purchased is the last of the
holdings of the Piedmont Realty com
pany. Consideration was pot made
' public, but the sites are located on
paved streets and are surrounded by
high class residences and a conserva
tive estimate of the value of the S9
parcels in the present market would
be about $75,000. .
