Orecmi'irni erso ia tedaw estimated at from 45.000,000 to 63,000.000 pounds, the greatest output ver known ia the state. - Present condition of the erop Is so extra ordinarily good, according to apectat reperts received by The Journal., end by its own ra rest! gation. that practically bo fears are mom expressed regarding tbe ripening of too moor erop. Tbe erop of prunes ia eo great in the Wil lamette ealley that trees are literally breaking with the fruit. The extent of the crop is far beyond previous estimates, which wars ex tremely good. ' Because of the enormous volume of fruit on the trees, expectations are that only a ear small per cent of the crop will run to targe sised fruit. Twenties will probably be too scarce to quote, while 80s will be bat a nominal affair. It is judged that the large per cent of the erop this season will run set larger than 40a. According to recent report of the Oregon Growers' Cooperative association, its business in prunes to date this season hare been unusu ally liberal at opening values. It claims that practically every country in Europe, aa well as Canada and the United States, has been buy ers from the organisation ror the 1922 crop. Independent packers report a like condi tion, with Europe especially interested in Ore gon supplies this season. Reports indicate that the independents are asking He a pound advance generally. COMPETITION FOB. COTTOS FORCES A SPIRITED ADTA5CE New Tork. June 27. A belief that there was competition for the ownership of cotton in the local stock started a very rapid and ex cited advance in the cotton market at the opening today. It was the first Jnly notice day, and notices were reported in circulation representing over 100,000, and possibly 125. OOO bales of cotton. This was a larger amount than anticipated, but the market opened firm at an advance of 3 to 2 S points, and before the end of the first hour aold 58 to 64 points above yesterday's closing quotations. It looked as though scattering spot houses, including aouthern interests, were prepared to take up any notices they might receive, and it also looked as though the two large houses credited with issuing the notices had broken around the ring to buy July contracts for sale, with a purpose, doubtless, of taking back tbe cotton. The demand for July was per haps the chief factor on the advance on the latter months, but the buying of new crop deliveries also was encouraged by tbe rela tively firm ruling of Liverpool, the steadier showing of exchange rates, a private erop re pert showing a smaller indicated yield than the figures of yesterday . and reports of rams on tbe south. An idea that the market had been pretty wen liquidated on the recent de cline of about 220 points from the best, which vcas also a factor which probably ex plained some of the local covering. The ad vance carried October contracts up to 21. TO, or nearly a cent a pound, above the low level of yesterday, after which trading became a little less active, and there was enough real izing to cause moderate reactions. Today's cotton market consisted of two rery distinct snd opposite periods. The first was a most violent recovery lasting through the fore noon. Th second was an almost equally abrupt reaction in the final half of the day. The afternoon decline was due to selling by local and Wall street interests in anticipa tion of a very favorable weekly weather report on Wednesday. I nder this selling the market closed with net gains reduced from 7 to 32. Open. High. Low. While -buyers neglected plain stock during the first rounds, the demand tor good quality animals was active in all branches. In the hog houses mixed snd plain lots shewed more gain than the best stuff. Nearly 10,000 hogs were held over from yesterday, hut this did not seem to hurt the trade. Shippra took narly 18,000 out of this market yester day and they were again in the trade today. Receipts were estimated at 8000 cattle. 36,000 hogs, 5000 sheep and 3000 calves. Bullish sentiment was again predominant in the wheat market today. A lack of selling pressure was noted at the start and thia led to short covering and there was some buying by cash houses, presumably against sales, ef cash wheat to exporters. A Strang feature today was the increased demand for winter wheat from exporters and there wee strong bids for both red and hard wheat e. L f. Buffalo. Tbe advance brought out some commission house selling. Later reports said that there were about 300.000 bushels ef No. 2 and No. 3 red wheat aold to local and eutzide mills on the basis of quarter eent over for the former and 5e under the July for the latter. Weather conditions were idesl for the growing spring crop, but wet weather has in terfered with the harvest in parts of the Southwest. Cables were lower. Corn showed a strong tone largely because of the lack of selling pressure and buying main ly by locals. There waa some commission house selling on the sdvance. Crop news was highly favorable and beneficial rains again were reported over many of the dry spots. Cash demand was moderate. Seaboard re ported good export demand for corn. Oats were firmer on local buying induced by unfavorable crop reports. Elevator interests were transferring hedges. Cash demand was alow. Excellent condition of pastures in New England territory is cur tailing consumption. Provisions "were firm. There was scattered buying mdueed by the strength in graia and hogs. Offerings were light. In the feeder divisiop of the cattle market there is indicated a weaker feeling along with the limited demand fer killer stuff. Aside from the very select killers, which natarally are not at all plentiful at this period of the season, the demand for cattle is extremely limited. In fact a further loss of about 25c is generally indicated on the common class of killers, although sales are still made within the quotation range. The liberal supplies of half-fat and half starved cattle have their effect upon the feeder division, and a loss. of fully 25c was indirated for the better clasa feeders during the Tuesday trade. CAPTAIX TAKES RIGID STEPS TO 'HALT DOPE IMPORTATION" Efforts tq put a stop; to the Importa tions of narcotics 011 liners of the Pacific Mail Steamship-company opers atirtg in the trans-Pacific service were made plain' on the sailing of th steamship Kmpire State from Sari Francisco Sunday. " Captain - Harry Nelson, commander of the vessel, made the most striking and sweeping statement in the history: of smuggling of drugs. He aald : ' "Before we sail notices will be posted in private cabins, on notice boards and In all crew's quarters, to the effect that the personnel of some 240 men aboard this ship have ' just one more chance for their jobs. If. on the return trip, one single ounce of opium be found aboard ship there will be a clean sweep from knight heads to transom, and nobody will be over looked. This means the entire staff of officers and engineers and sailors, stewards and everybody else will gd. The measure Is drastic, but -It is necessary." Captain Nelson went en to explain that the average person ashore has no idea at all of the Infinite possibilities for getting dope aboard ship. In Ori ental ports the go-down coolies swarm all over the ship to do stevedoring, and unless the government provides special operatives to search every tnsn who comes aboard. It Is impossible to stop the stuff from being concealed. The bulk Is almost nothing, and the value by measurement square inch is infinitely more than gold.
