STEEL
London, June 21. The Iron and steel trades
which have been handicapped by the engi
neers' dispute have prospects of better condi
tions. High railway rates have had a retard
ing influence cn the industry, but it is ex
pected that in a comparatively short time the
trade will again approach the 1920 level.
HARDWARE
New Orleans. June 21. For the first time
this yesr business has begun to improve in
the haTdwsre line. Builders hardware and
agricultural implements show large sale in
creases. Sales of these commodities were cur
tailed earlier by floods in this state, Missis
sippi and Texas.
HATS
New Orleans, June 2 1. Jot) hers report a
steady flow of orders for fall delivery. Book
ings far exceed anything they have ever had
at this time of the year. Hat sales are far
in excess of a year ago. The trade, however,
is still disposed to buy conservatively and for
part of their needs only.

sThe Duluth iron mines are running at in
proximately 75 per cent of normal capacity
This is far in excess of the production of last
year and there is every prospect that the mines
will double their output in the next few
months. The freight, rates -from the mines
to the Duluth Superior docks have been re
duced 10 per cent.
Freightv equipment costing $3,250,000
being purchased by the Northern Pacific rail

Railroads Prepare
For Big Business
By H. F. Laufman
Pittsburg. Pa., June 21. Railroads are
preparing for a large increase in atosnage nex
fall. Cars are being repaired and equipmen
is being put in shape for much heavier haulage
than is offered at present. Transportation
companies are reaping the benefits of locge:
hauls of coal.
Building operations have reached a volume
where labor shortage is apparent. Plastering
contractors in this district an paying 80 cents
an hour to hod earners and common laborers.
The peak of the boom has not been reached
here. Demands for building permits indicate
a . large expansion during the summer months.
Steel makers have refrained from making
prices for deliveries over , the third quarter.
Scene Hues are quoted only up to July. This
is partly due to tha miners strike and to
certainty as to yrrodnctioa eosta.
Wholesale and retail trade continues to ex
pand. Collections are better and demand for
lumber has spread to all lines.

FRC1T OUTXOOK
AXB PRICES ABE GOOD
-MiddUeton. Idaho, June 21. The Emmett
Cherry company, incorporated for $50,000, is
being filed todsy at Boise. Idaho, the incor
porators being Caldwell men of prominent busi
ness standing: J. B. Bell. Charles T.
Hawkes. D. U. Bhewee. Earl Boyes, M. S.
McAdoo and L. A. Harmon.
They have a 100-acre Mock eight miles
southwest of Emmett, tn the noted cherry
aad peach district. Thia tract they will plaat
at once to sweet cherries and prunes, 40 acres
of the former and 60 acres of the latter.
Mr. Bell, who is to be the general manager
of the enterprise, said thia morning that the
cherry and prune crop of the Emmett valley
is most encouraging this year, many contracts
of sale having already been- eoorammated -at
55 cents per crate for prunes. 10 cents per
pound for sweet cherries, and 6 cents per
pound for sour cherries, these prices being net,
f. o. b. the local railroad station. Handsome
returm are thus being assured fruit growers.
Indicative of this it ia estimated that J. R.
Fields, with 21 acres of cherries, will receive
$18,000 for his crop. Various growers are
right along in the same line for handsome re
turns. .

is gratifying to note that a stronger tone ob

exists aa said in print cloths. Transactions
are involving spot deliveries or shipment dur

sell even for August deliveries.

higher than on Monday. Southern 88 inch

upward tendency in many quarters. The Jsp

An effort is being made by the chamber of
commerce to include the suburban area in
the open shop district. The revival inibulld-
I in Philadelphia itself ha been due Israels
to the establishment of the American plan here
by the chamber of commerce. Muildlng in
the suburbs r being somewhat impeded by
the fact that some workuigmea are not per

because some materials are not classed as
union-made.. The open shop or American
plan discriminates agaiiwt neither union nor
union workers, holding that all work era have

IN SAN FRANCISCO MARlTET
San -Francisco. June 21. (IT. P. Re
ceipt of asparagus were heavier today than
for sometime and the market is much easier
en green . and ordinary white grass. Soma
dealers were experiencing difficulty cleaning
up on lower grades and were ot the- opinion
that lower prices might be expected if the
heavy receipts continue.
The market on old potatoes is weaker. Lo
cal supiiUea are not excessive, but cars are
coming ia almost every day from the northern
states, causing a much easier feeling among
the dealers. . Trading on Gems at the track,
was reported at) $1.75 to $2.00 cvt, which
will necessarily bring down prices on tha
ftreets to the retailers. Supplies of new po
tatoes are heavy . and garnets are selling at
2 to 2 to cents a pound, while fancy white po
tatoes sold aa high as 3 cents.
The higher prices on berries during tha
last few days has lessened demand and dealers
were forced to drop on both blacks and straw
berries, the latter selling 5 to 10 cents leas en
drawers. The wide range in prices ia duo
largely to the great difference in quality.
Cantaloupes are steady to firm, with a good
demand reported. Plums and cucumbers are
slightly lower. Rhubarb is scarce . aad ad
vancing in price. New supplies of lettuce were
received today 'and prices on lead erates
ranged from $1.25 to $1.50, while dry crate
sold from 75 cents to $1 each. Consumption
on watermelon ia showing some improvement

WOOL MARKET AFFECTED BT
RISING PRICE OF COTTON
Boston, June 21. That the rising price of
cotton has had aome effect on the wool mar
ket is evidenced today by evidence to the ef
fect that yarn users are showing a tendency to
meet the quotations of the spinners. It ia not
general sign, but the trend exists and white
ttsera are still for the most part offering bkis
below the spinners' quotation, there ia mani
festly a willingness to come up. Men's., wear
ftbrci are doing so well that one may venture
tu predict that the corner has been turned.
However, admitting that this may be so. shrewd
observers suggest that sellers watch- their atep
and not proceed too recklessly. They mean,
of course, that care should be taken not to
boost prices so high that buyers will suddenly
stop.
