ncened the government crop report. Today"!
lush cotton prices were fully a cent above tbe
top of lest autumn, when the government came

1021 harvest. Tbe basis for the present np-

Hat reasonable Is something which remains to
le seen- At least, they (o against the prece
dent which that of a late start such a cotton
has had this season, is apt to be followed by
improvement rather tha bjr further deter
ioration during tbe first half of the crop
i period, i
Superabundance of und
The superabundance supply of fund's which
ba been pressing on the money market was
sgaia strikingly exemplified today. The call
- loan renewal rate which bad reached on
' Thursday the lowest in over four years, was
reduced to three per eest today. Time money
j notations did not get down to the extreme
l.w of m month ago. but they were eery eJcie
to it. .with, loans for the shorter period freely
" obtainable at four per cent and for tbe longer
: lienod at 44 per cent. Continued weakness
-of the continental exchanges was a measure
of the disappointment felt at tbe obstacles
which hare arisen in the path of the German
loan, and which seemed insurmountable whirs
politics is placed ahead ot economic consider
ation in the councils of Europe.
Price Changes' Irregular
Price chances on trie stock exchange were
extremely irregular with business very dull
aa Judged by recent standards. Railway stocks
were inclined, to yield ground, reflecting tbe
uncertainty over the labor outlook. Mexican
Iwtroleum was strong in anticipation of a fa--vorable
: earning statement, and the sugar
stocks, .following the lead of the sugar market,
were in demand once more at rising prices.
1 jbertj ; bond with the exception of the sec
ond 4 i t. held above par and tbe bond mar
ket as a whole was more active, although with
no tendency toward any general resumption of
tbe advance.
Speculative Interest Stale
.. r'er the afternoon break on the stock ex
change the explanation ray wholly in condi
tions within tbe market itself. For nearly
a week. -pool managers have tried unsuccess
fully to start prices moving upward again by
bidding up first one and then another set of
speoiaiUea. la a word, the speculative move
ment -has gone stale, and It was tne hasty
closing out of holdings in the recent syndicate
favorites, once it was seen that tbe market
had started 'down, which was responsible for
the decline of the last twe hours. Naturally
tbe sharpest break occurred la industrial stocks
in wMeh tbe operations bad gone to tbe
a res text lengths. Among tbese were tbe oils,
tike motors, tbe equipments, the snipping
stocks and tbe Junior Kails. Railway snares
a a group were heavy from the start and
tbe- discovery that operations for the roe in
various low-priced issue like New Haven,
1-ake Erie at Western and the Erie, had
ceased, waa one of 'the first things which
set the downward movement going.

More, yet it was not tiie result of
developments. Conditions within the specula
tive structures have been gradually getting
leas favorable, and convinced ' that the up
ward movement had for the time being at
least been hatted, tbe trading element turned
to the selling side. A rood deal of genuine
liquidation was brought out and prices closed
at the bottom, with a considerable show of
weakness. ,
Outside the stock exchange the most inter
esting feature of tbe day were the continued
strength of the cotton market, tbe further
sagging of money rates, etc. '

Speoai Oorropoadent ot The JoamaL f
Philadelphia. June 9. The ' nUseellaneous
movement of freigk ever the Pennsvlvania and
Reading aystems for the first week of jane
has been far heavier than for the correspond
ing period of 1921, but the total carioadings
show a decrease. iTlus is Hue. to the falling
off in anthracite -coal shipments because of
the prolonged strike.. No inconvenience from
tack ot Xnei in this section baa been reported
trat the fact that 200.000 men in the an
thracite fields have been out of work now
tor 10 weeks is seriously affecting business
in Eastern Pennsylvania aa It influences the
buying of goods to meet the Deeeaaitiea of over
1,000.000 persons.
The continuation of building operations
throughout tb district is unabated. Bowa
of dwellings are going up all over thia city
and two new office buildings to cost $5,000,
000 soon will be nnder way. The construc
tion Of frame dwelling m the Booth Jersey
resorts along the coast is fieing rushed at
top speed to catch, np witli .the demand for
cot teats. This is particularly true of Ocean
City. Members of the building trades are
welt employed and there ia aa extensive demand
for building materials.' ' s- i '
Many t-mailer business places and neigh
borhood shops closed einee the beginning of
tiie year . when business depression caused
business failures are being reopened in many
cases with foreigners replacing the original
occupants.

mERCHANTS SEEK
TEXTILE GOODS
y C . Marshall
- Special Correspondent ef Tbe Journal.
Chicago. June 9. Thousands of merchants
frcM the Middle West have descended, on Chi
cago in the last week seeking textile goods
among the big Jobbing houses. Clearance
Ues bare been advertised for this week and
even tiie radio .has been used to spread the
news far and wide, but Jobbers were hardly
prepared for tbe magnitude of the response.
Similar salea had been held earlier ia the
spring and while they produced considerable
business It was as nothing compared with
tbe buying of tbe last two days. Tbe most en
couraging feature of this business bas been that
the out-of-town merchants seem to have aban
doned their former hand-to-mouth policy and
have begun to place orders right snd left to
fill up their empty shelves.
Conservative jobbers declare these are the
most successful sales of tbe kind they have
ever seen. There has, been Uttle shopping
around and no quibbling about price.? Mer
chants have come into the market keiowing
what they wanted and the price they were wilt-
ua vw anu nave Douint prcmotlv when
price was right. The bie houses have
large quantities of goods, 1 particularly
dresses. Department stores and retailers
oeen almost as active as thm inhhm.
