the War Finance corporation concerning 1
the return of prosperity to Western agri
culture, partlculaly the sheep and stock
men. Senator McNary declared that the
contrary la show by the demand for a
price guarantee coming from many
farming sections and expressed the view
that this agitation would subside if the
War Finance -corporation would act
more liberally In aiding farmers to plant
and harvest tbelr crops.'
Henator EtanfleWf said that while con
ditions are Improving, he is far from
agreeing with Meyer that satisfactory
prices are now being realised.
"Prices cannot be satisfactory when
they are below, the coat of production.
not only below the costs at which stock
on hand was .produced, but below the
present cents. Of all the products men
tioned by Mr, Meyer, corn, hogs, csttle.
, sheep, hides and grain, not one Is- up
to the cost of production except fat
lambs ready for slaughter. In which
there Is now a slight profit, and possibly
In corn, but not in corn pn the basis
. -of the coat at which U was produced.

gon are trying to hang on without

"We foolishly hoped that the War

letter, "but we find that In practical
operation they require the same strict
rules. They only do the farmer up In
a package and deliver him back into
the hands of the money lender.
"I am sending a copy of. my letter
to you to alt the senators who ae
known to be In sympathy with the alms
of the agricultural btoc. and I hope that
you and they will pardon the plain
speaking In this letter. If you could
be on the ground and see as I dp the
.. distress among these people, I am sure
that you would feel willing to try to
bring such pressure to bear as would
have these matters administered In
way to afford real relief."
Meyer in his statement a few days
ago aald that sheep are selling
prices considered satisfactory to growers
and feeders," that the cattle market I
no longer demoralised, but that feeding
and fattening Is going forward with

The police told about finding the

ragged a broken .bed spring from the
refuse dump.- On this the two men had
made a bed of old gunny sacks. A
mouldy loaf of bread lay on the ground
one corner, near two tins of jam
which had' been discarded due to
breakage in shipment. A half-empty can
tomatoes, soured, after being open
several days, comprised the remainder
f their commissary.
'How lona has it been since you
washed your face?" Keegan declared he
atked Swensen.'
"Well, I loaned a cake of soap to a
fellow here seven ' days ago, and he
never brought It back," the boy replied.
"We get enofgh ' to eat here in the
dump when lis dry, but when it rains
vre have to go hungry. The rain spoils
ite bread and washes the other stuff
away.
Questioning revealed that Desire is
not a citizen. He will probably be
turned over to the immigration authori
ties for deportation as an undesirable
clttsen. He said the only relative he
had is a brother somewhere in France
