LONDOX, Feb. 18. Two matters of
supreme Interest are exercising the
minds of golfers In Great Britain. One
la tha condition under which tha British
amateur championship shall be played In
the future and the other concerns the
welrht and ndxe of tha golf ball Tha
latter, which appears to be aa eternal
problem, affects all golfers.
The cose for the reformers la that the
balance of power between the ball and
the length of the holes has been lost and
must be restored. This, they contend,
can only be achieved by standardizing
a ball which sets a definite limit upon
the distance it can be' driven. Owing to
tha abnormal lengrns which some golfers
can propel the modern golf ball, it Is
urged that many desirable features of
courses are rendered nugatory. To re
cover these features and conserve those
that are If ft Is possible tn only one
direction, vis., to cut down the energy
or the ball.'
WA3T DEFINITE LIMITS
What is it precisely that the reform
ers who constitute a committee of the
Royal and Ancient club are anxious to
accomplish? They wish to Introduce a
bail of such specific gravity that will
set definite and scientific limits upon
the distance it can be hit "So far and
no farther," ia eventually to be tha
motto.
Not satisfied -with their efforts of
a year ago to place limitations upon
the sise and weight of the ball, exper
iments are to ne undertaken In another-direction,
it Is perfectly true that
the present limit ball did not produce
tha results contemplated. Ray, Mitchell.
Braid, Tolley. Wethered. Jesse Guilford
and the rest of the mighty hitters
flogged the present ball Just as far. If
not farther, aa the old small, heavy
ones. The loas In weight was more
than made up by an Increased tension
in the winding of the rubber thread sur
rounding the core.
In this way the intention of the 'au
thorities was at once defeated. The
next experiment is to be with a bail
of the largest sise procurable, but of
unrestricted weight.
TO MAKE EXPEBIMEKTS
pedal competitions will be organ
ited by tha Royal and Ancient Golf clab
and other championship cluba, and the
results obtained with balls in use of
thla type will be noted. There will be
no diminution In length, because the
slightly Increased sise of the ball
more than counteracted by the permis
sion of unrestricted weight. Wind pres
sure will certainly be greater by reason
or the larger surface. .
There will follow : experiments with
a large ball of restricted weight and,
finally, we shall be faced with the "only
alternative," the introduction of the
"floater." In the mass, golfers will re
gard a bait of this type with antajron
istic feelings. -The majority have never
played with any but the heavy ball, and
to a certain extent they can keep It un
der control. Not so the floater.

TWEW YORK. Feb. 12. The part that
' women played In golf ia 1)21 was ao
important that mere man take heed and
give doe consideration to the advance-...
ment which the woman golfer la making.-
It is true there was no woman champion
developed who outplayed a man la a title

and admirable improvement last season
that they rained on the man more ap
preciably than ever before.
For 10 years Miss Marian HoTilns has
been striving to win the women's cham-.
pionship of the united States at golf.
She succeeded la 1S2L Most men would

fall off bat she kept everlastingly at it
until she became a leader.

Miss Cecil Leltch had the meet re
markable golf season ef any player,
either man or woman, in 1R1. the won
three national championships in the hard
eat competition and if she did lose la
the United States event. It was doe as '
much to the fact that she was suffering ,
Dl health at the moment as to any other
cause.
It Is not anticipated that the time '
will come when women will outplay the
men and win the national amateur title
but If the women In tha Untied Eta tee
continue to improve aa they have, many
ef the men who now profess to find their -game
too strong for a woman to meet,
will be soundly beaten.
Jesse Guilford, the national amateur
champion, may not have the fireworks of :
some of his competitors bnt when ba
plays for tbe green be plays like a civil
engineer laying out the abortest distance
between two points Irrespective ef Inter
rening obstacles. If he la not over golfed
this summer, he will give all f those -entered
against him tn the championships -
or lzz such a race aa baa not been
seen but two or three times tn the laat
20 yeara, Guilford la aa steady as the
pendulum of grandfather's clock.
