After two day of reflection, Jaraea E.
Bencetadt and Murdock chanyed their
pl-a of pot Klty Thursday afternoon
nd told Circuit Judge Belt they would
not longer reatat punlnhment. The men
had pleaded not ruilty Tueaday and trial
of the raa waa assigned to Judge Belt.
The judg announced that he would pro
nounce antenoe today at Z p. m.
-Murdock dramatically told the court
that ha alone ahould be punished for
the crime. II said that Bercstadt and
Jack Campbell, who wa killed by Cash
Iff Georce Alt during the attempted
robbery, had been a-oaded Into Joining
the venture by Mar dock hlmaelf.
"I called them "yellow when they

circuit court Judge and the district at

Scare Over Gunmen
Astoria. Feb. ' 17. Chinese - residents
of Astoria, uneasy for some days over
the outbreaks of tong warfare through
out the West, were sailed with panic
late Wednesday night when it was re

by Sheriff Kelson and his deputies, but
without finding any suspected men.

The federal grand Jury Joined la the
crusade against the narcotic drug; evil In
Oregon Thursday afternoon when It re
turned 13 true bills to Federal Judge
C E. Wolverton against alleged narcotic
vendors in this state. "Evidence" valued
at more than $110,000 Is held in the
vaults ia the federal building against
these defendants.
The grand Jury " returned a total of
25 true bills. . Seven -men and women
were Indicted for alleged violation of
the Volstead act. three as alleged post-
office robbers, one alleged white slaver,
one alleged "mail order-bootlegger" and
another for alleged impersonation of
federal officer. '

are Astoria soft drink stand proprietors.

Rollness and George Teeters, who had
been previously held on liquor charges.
