I make this as a definite statement MAKES PEOPOSITIOX Director Woodward returned to the subject of the 400 girls in institutions, asking where Mahone gained his infor mation that the girls' downfall was due to dancing In the schools. Mahone ex plained the girls wrote out their lives when they entered the institutions, and that girls 12 or IS years old could be depended upon to teU the truth, whereas the older girls would not tell the truth ai to the causes of their downfall. Just how many under 1 are In volved?" asked Woodward. Mahone hesitated. About those over It, you Just said they did not tell the truth," persisted woodward. "Get me one girl under 12 who ascribes her downfall to school dancing and I'll vote to take dancing out of the schools, said Director Thomas. Dr. Ouy Fitch Phelps was the next speaker. He said he objected to danc ing on the common psychology of the question, and did not propose to be bluffed out of his position. If the board wanted them to produce a 12-year-old girl who waa ruined because of high school dancing, he would contract to do It, pro rlded the board would accept the challenge and close its buildings to dancing. 9PCAKEBBISSED when board members undertook to question Phelps, he objected, declaring he would not be thrown into confusion. "I bave evidence In my possession that every kind of danoa rulna somebody.1 he declared. "When you parade what you can a clean" ' Rot I" yelled someone from the audi ence. A chorus of hisses drowned the rest of tha sentence. "Just two animals make a noise like that" remarked rhelpa. the goose and the snake. "I have It straight, gentlemen," he continued. "Don't cross-examine me. i Don't ask the lady to come in here and tell you what is going on. Tou ought to know what la going on In your schools. I challenge the statement that music causes one to dance. Dance rauslo that does auggest things ta the low as grade of music. Any Institution that haa to be chaperoned Is a dangerous Institution. Tou cannot chaperon evil, and the dance ta per se wrong and dangerous, and. so help me, God, I am going to fight this throurti ' through. Dr. W. B. lllnaon then spoke briefly. declaring that a high school girl, name of high school withheld, had to leave her partner on the door because tha liquor oa his breath waa Intolerable; that outside of the building was aa empty bottle and men were under the Influence of liquor who had to be pushed Into the vehicle waiting for them. Tha meeting waa then turned over to the dancing adherents who proceeded ts flay the ministers ta a finish. DES1KS COSSET .TOST 7 Irving Brown of tha student body of Franklia . high school, called unoa hv Newt li to give tha student viewpoint, de clared the dances at Franklin have been clean. "Only on one occasion was It neces sary to reprimand anybody." declared young Brown. "We turned them oft the "I have talked to mothers who tell me this could not have happened lately," said Wilson, "because girls do not wear corsets any more. We bave gathered up evidence and will lay it before the com mittee. It is of a private nature. This is not a court in which witnesses are here to tell everything they know. We are petitioners before you. We have a right to state our own views. We think the checking of corsets was done about four or five years ago at a certain school of this city." "I want the name of the school where this act occurred," Insisted Woodward. "That would arouse controversy," said Wilson, "and X would be compelled to give names of people." "I must confess r that you have made a statement which you have, in the most cowardly manner, evaded and re fused to answer, accused Woodward. AtJDIEJfCE IX UPROAR "Tou attempted to insult me last night." complained Wilson, "when I was making a statement and I resented it Ws have never heard of men in our Uvea seeking information and listening to petitions asking men If they will give names and under oath." . "Tou will give evidence before you are through," persisted Woodward. "And you must same that school here tonight." The audience was in an uproar. Wil son refused to give the information. Young Brown of Franklin Jumped up. "Tou make a serious statement," he declared. "It Is an insult to the girls ttending our dances. It is a disgrace these fathers and mothers to say these girls take off their corsets and dance in an improper manner. I never heard of the expression Ironclad' until read It In the paper, From the gallery came the cry, "It Is one of the axioms of publlo morality not to start a statement in public you would not finish in public.' Was not the episode really nine years ago 7" asked PirecSSr SfaulL "It was about four years ago." said Wilson. BEES METHODISTS TJA5CE Mrs. C W. Hayhurst of the Parent Teacher association told of going to the charity ball Wsdnesday night and find lng numerous ministers dancing there. among them Methodists. There seems to be Quite a difference of opinion," she remarked. "I don't see why anything begun at a public meeting should take a private charac ter. I came to answer accusations sug gested last night" "So tar I have seen nothing or heard nothing that will bear out anywhere the statement they made last night" said Director Clark. "One of the ministers said no good could come from dancing, and yet at the ball given last night for the unem ployed something like 15000 was raised. 1 I firmly believe this Investigation should be continued by the entire board. I take It from tha remarks of the men they will take it to some higher court If we decide to keep dancing. I suppose If we decided to take -dancing out of the schools the other side would take It to a higher court I know of one city where they abolished dancing In the high school and are now trying to got It back." ItESEKT XySTJI-T Numerous dancing adherents spoke. W. P. Adams hotly declared tha ministers had "wrongfully, unlawfully and- with malice in their hearts, suvnaerea our boys and our girls, slandered the Par ent-Teacher council, and are not entitled to any consideration, and that the dis trict attorney's office should be con sulted 'to ascertain whether or not the law would not apply to them the same as to the man oa the street Principal Boyd explained that dancing had been removed from Washington high a year ago because of some objec tionable features. This was in the nature of a Busoension for a period, such as is given any of tha organisations. r "I have gone to Washington high school four years," said Robert Mauts. Student and In all my lite I have never received such an insult Every student in high school has been Insulted to night Would these men let their daugh ters go without a chaperon T If they let them go without a chaperon they would be doing wrong.
