' Salem, Jan. 10. While this is the last
day of grace for delinquent motorists,
those who have acted in good faith in
an effort to provide their automobile
with a set of the-1922 license plates and
are able to produce evidence of this good
faith need have no' fear of the istrong
arm of the law, according to Sain A.
Kozer, secretary of :tate and nominal
bead of the state'arjteaffic law enforce
ment department. - .
To date slightly more than' 60,000 sets
of license plates have actually been sent
out to owners of motor vehicles. Be
tween 15.000 and.'2S,6M' applications-
some of them filed since January 1
are yet to be filled. Until such time ;
the auto registration, department is able
to dig out from under and clean its desk
of all applications, it will not be prac
tical to start the rigid enforcement of
the law requiring license plates of the
current year on motor vehicles, Kozer
explains. License plates are going out
at the rate of between 1500 and 2000 a
day S3'1 it will probably be February 1
before the traffic officials are notified
arrests are In order.

Mrs. Eva Moore of Portland, when
called to . the witness stand in Circuit
Judge Tarwell's court today, agreed with
witnesses who had gone before her that
Mrs. Greta L. Moore-Thompson was
dressed very shabbily as a child when
she was living with her stepmother, Jes
sie ELrod Moore, and her father, L. K.
Moore, at Moro, Or. Mrs. Thompson is
now taring to break her father's will,
which disinherited her.
Mrs. Moore, who Is Greta's aunt by
marriage, said the girl s clothes were
"plain" at a time when the Moore family
was well-to-do' and when the stepmother
was dressed in the best.
The witness testified that after the
Moores moved to Portland she came to
visit them and f6und Greta in a very
small bedroom that contained nothing
but a cot. bureau and one chair. The
stepmother and father had a sumptuous
bedroom, she said. The feeling between
the stepmother and the girl was not
good, she added. A
Mabel Moore, daughter of Mrs. Eva
Moore, was on the stand Thursday after
noon and tills morning. She testified as
did her mother regarding Greta's
clothes.
Roy Powell, uncle of Greta's, intimated
on the stand that a story that he and
Greta had been over-friendly had origin
ated with the stepmother. He indignant
ly denied the story.

Portland led Seattle in huilding activ
ity during the fiscal year ending Novem
ber 30, according to the annual- report
filed this morning by H. E. Plumirjer,
head of the bnilding , division. In all
classes of construction Portland issued
27 per cent more permits than Seattle
and the valuation of construction ex
ceeded that of the Sound City by 40 per
cent.
Plnmmer points out in his report that
with the exception of 1911 and 1912 the
last year was the most active in the
erection of dwellings.
For this class of construction 2839 per
mits were Issued. The valuation of the
buildings Is $9,853,680.
In all classes 14.032 permits for .srork
valued at $17,004,226 were issued during
the year. This shows a gain of 36 per
cent in number and 39 per cent in val
uation over the proceeding year.
Plummer predicts , that in 19,22 there
win oe less ouiiamg in uie aweiung class
and more in hotels, apartments and
flats. This, ne says, will be due to the
anticipation of the 1925 exposition.

A MOST HEALTHY GROWTH
Wenatchee. Wash.. Jan. 20. The healthy
growth of North Central Washington is indicated
by the increase in bank deposits in the yesr
1921. On December 31. 1921. deposita in 16
banks of the 41 in this section totaled $8,271,
194, or $1,849,893 more than on December
31. 1920, when they totaled $6,420,801. This
is an increase of over 25 per cent during the
past year.
Others banks whose state menu are not arail
sble, will show similar gains. The statements
show that in 1920 the banks had large amounts
of bills payable. In 1921 most of these had
been liquidated. The reason is that in 1920
farmers and business men were, many of them,
nnable to take up their notes when due. The
banks had to borrow money to carry them. In
1921 these notes were paid to a much greater
extent
Nine hanks that included statement of bills
payable and rediscounts in- the data submitted
to the Daily World had bills due. on December
31, 1920, amounting to sso.eil. The same
nine banks had only $84,427 of bills due on
December 31, 1921.
Returns from 23 of the banks in Chelan.
Okanogan, Douglas and Grant counties show
that total deposita were $9,328,433 on De
cember 31. 1951. In September, 1921, the
derjoaits of 13 others were $2,118:083. making
a total for the 34 of $11,4.44,516. The other
seven banks would bring the total to ever $12,-000,000.
