Close Carlton Bank;
Hofie to Reorganize
McMinnville, Jan. 20. The Bank of
Carlton closed its doors Thursday for
60 days with the hope of reorganizing
durinp: that period. L. C. Thompson has
been the mainstay in continuing the bank
since October, when a shortage of about
$15,000 was discovered and the cashier
was bound over to the circuit court after
a hearing before Justice Rogers. The
present closing is said to be due to the
inability of certain stockholders to sup
ply their share of funds necessary to
continue operations.

COLUMBIA RIYZB, KTfcAMEBS
AWAIT BKEAKI50 OF ICE
"As soon aa the weather noderatea
the steamers of The Dalles Transport
tlon company will attempt to go on reg-
alar schedule again," said Charles E.
Steelsmith, manager, yesterday In i
ferring to the ice blockade in the middle
and upper rivers. "Ice in the middle
river Is clear and when tt breaks will
run out clear. The only danger now is
tbe break at the big eddy, and points
above Celilo, although Ice from those
points will be badly broken up when tt
reaches The Dalles.
"On the last voyage down the steamer
Mad aline made a good trip. We broke
the Jam at Crates point and at afema
loose Island and from there to the
locks it was clear Joe, Following a
thaw 'on this cold spell I do not look
for any jams and especially in the lower
river."
Thin ice is forming In the Columbia
below the mouth of the Willamette, but
not sufficient to hamper navigation,
Wooden steam schooners (unsheathed)
are placing ice breakers across the bow
and no delay has been experienced nor
damage done. The clear ice does not
bother steel vessels or sheathed wooden
craft.
