PORTLAND took' a mighty step forward on that long-ago
day in 1864 when telegraphic communication was estab
lished with the world.
For many weary months men of .fortitude, imbued with that
indomitable spirit which builds empires, had labored long and
hard stretching a slender strand of wire from San Francisco,
the metropolis, to Portland, the then frontier settlement.
Over mountains, across canyons and streams, through seemingly-impenetrable
forests they fought their way and
triumphed.
At last the work was completed, the final testing done, a
congratulatory greeting and then, the first message, repro
duced above, came to Ladd & Tilton.
It is not surprising that this pioneer institution, first in so
many things in the Pacific Northwest should have the distinc-
. uon of receiving the first tele
graphic message into Portland
Now, as then, LADD & TILTON
