TUESDAY, JANUARY 3 1022. C-THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. "PORTLAND, OREGON DE VALERA REJECTS HEW PEACE MOVE Bj Dsaiel 0CeaeU Dublle. Jan.: !.!. N. 8 A compro mise on Um Irish treaty by which the tmr-l would be saased by thn Dail EH. raniw with the understanding that Ea monn da Valera would contlnu to lead op portion aralnat It and acalnst the . arovtslonal roremment established under ita aiinoruy. waa suKsested to the Dai) Eirann thla afternoon by Michael Col Una, but, De Yalera rejected it. . Collins proposed hla scheme as a "way out of the difficulty." , Tm men and women who are oppos ing the peace treaty could continue against IV said uoinna. 11 ins treaty la paUiXaH than th Rritiah Will h Ih. solved. But let them (the anti -treaty faction) let the treaty go through and then let them fight the provisional gov ernment upon this issue." COLLIK8 MAKES' FLEA The first move to Una up the Dail for unanimous ratification of Uie treaty came when Collins addressed an appeal to the committee following the rejection of hla compromise propoaal by De Va lera. "The people of Ireland want this treaty.'? said Collina.. "I appeal to all. supporters and opponents, tor its ratifi cation without a division.! i Supporter of the Irish peace treaty got Into action at once when mm Elreann convened today for final debate upon the pact. "Opponents of the. treaty lack respon sibility and imagination, said S. H. Beasly of Kerry county, general in the Irish Republican army, and an adherent of the Collins-Griffith pro-treaty faction. '-Ireland was ' not made tor Dall but Dail was created for the nation." Beasly told of the strength the treaty would give Ireland, saying army would bold Che strongest points fa Ireland; not in flying columns bat with troops equipped with artillery and airplanes." DEFE1TDEKS MEET ATTACK The defenders of the treaty had no sooner opened ' than the opponents 'launched a vigorous counter-attack. A. O'Connor of County Kildare charged that -peace had been "shoved down the throats of the Irish at the point of the bayonet" Michael Collins. Sinn. Fein army chief. "The Irish people are being rambled i interrupted, shouting with in the name of formulas. Under! "Have yon seen their ruined homes the treaty they would have their own J Have you heard their murdered sons?" coinage and stamps and army. ThWr O'Connor had started off mildly enough, sarins; he was going to set as example of brevity. , ' . The treaty had suffered from the de sertion of some of its advocates, said O'Connor. ."I am. unable to understand whether it was a treaty of consent or was signed under duress." - COTCTTESS HAS SAT ' - - ', One of the most . vitriolic attacks against the treaty was made by Countess Marciewics, a member of the Dail cabi net. ' .-. - - .. ; "I prefer death to the dishonor of this treaty." .said she." "I know the people of Ireland -stand by me ; that they will fight to their death."
