BOT IS SHTCEBE
! Harold, a quiet and profound lad, was
not attracted by the blood and thunder
tlirllls of Gardner's career. In books
b)e taste goes to those which contain
some philosophy of life,4 rather than to
. ttere adventure tales. ,
I That tame human impulse which
tfeused Gardner to forfeit his liberty
ml her than slay his captor probably im-
pfelled Harold to send a message of
creer and bis picture to the man to
whom the fruits of life have been taken.
J Gardner, in turn, sent bis picture, tak
er In the Phoenix Jail, and words of ad-

1 Tnere was a touch of grim humor
when Gardner wrote:
"Had I known of you when I was in
Portland I surely would have called on
jjou."
I The letter in the bandit's bold, argres
Mve handwriting those who profess to
djognose from a penmanship one's
characteristics, might call It that of an
arnbltious, hasty and Impulsive person
Indicates that Gardner Is above the or
dinary In intellect and culture.

Traffic Eegulation
By State Instead of,
: City, Is Advocated
The repeal of municipal traffic ordi
nances in favor of the state tow was ad
vocated by Municipal Judge Roesman
In a traffic lecture at the Central library
Tuesday night. The meeting was one of
a series arranged by the National Safety
council. Judge Rossman's topic being
"The Violator of Law and Common
Sense." .
Judge Rosstnaa Quoted figures to show
that la the last year his court bad dis
posed of mora case than there are per
sons -in. the state oapltaL He declared
that approximately 1 in every U persons
had appeared before the court to answer
to a charge of trsLffie law violation dur
ing the year.' The daily average for the
year -was 85..
Substitution of the state law for the
municipal ordinances, Rossman assert
ed, would reduce the number of viola
tions In the state, as many neighboring
communities have laws which oyffer and
confuse the motorist into unwitting vio
lation. - . .
