moTementa. Tba first is tha daily fluctuation due
to local causes and tha relation of supply to Im
mediate demand. This movement will not tie

occur annually, are wholly seasonal in character.
and are influenced by both supply and demand,
although supply is tha mora important factor.
Tha third movement is seas pronounced aa m
it pricea more within a narrower range than
tha second. The fourth, or major, price move
ment usually , requires fram three to fire years
to complete its cycle.
PRODUCTION METHODS CONTROL
MOVEMENTS
This diaruadoa it confined larrcly to the sec
ond and third movement, and the accompany
ing chart waa prepared Brunanlr ta anew aen-
niEehr how thev are eatabiisiied and the rela
tion between tneee movements ana tne volume
of receipt. The two movement are tha result
of the methods of breeding and production in
practice in the surplus hog producing state, and
sra roverned by tha fact that sows are brad to
farrow in tha spring and tall and that the great
e'. number of pigs are born in the spring months.
Tbeae pigs tiauaUy are realty lor maraec ana are
most eeonamieallv marketed for nork within
icht or nine months followine their birth. The
beary crop of spring pigs is marketed in the
winter months, while tna smaller supply oi uui
mm i. aent ta market in liar and June.
TDese prevailing metnoas oi precoma; ana;
marketing bogs usually result in tha two price
cycles each year. The lowest pricea are made
in the late fall and early winter months, October
to February, inclusive, when the spring pigs
ara marketed and the volume of receipt is
greatest. The highest pricea are reached usually
in the lata summer or early, fall, when receipts
are at the minim am, and the supply of choice,
lightweight hogs suitable for loin and baoon pur
poses is so small as to command a premium.
The third price movement estabashinc a com
plete cycle usually occur ia to earing months.
Prices rise as k result af the decrease in receipts
prior to the arrival of fall-bora pig at market
and go down while the ' movement of fall-born
Dim ia in progress. Prices in tha spring rise sel
dom reach the level attained ia the snbaequant
latit summer or early fail, and when they do it
is usually during a price dedin in tha major
cycle.
FIVE MAJOR MOVEMENTS IN CO YEARS
The fourth or ma tor price movement win onbr
be discussed briefly here. Apparently there have
been five of these - maior cycles since lHUu
I'ata are not available to show when the major
movement in progress ia 1901 began, bat in
January of that year orices were moving upward
for the weekly average roes from $5.05 tha first
week in January. 19U1. to ST. TV tna week
ending July 26. 1902. From tha latter date
there wsa a reaction to 14.28 tba week ending
November 28, 1903, when the first major cycle
waa eomuletad. Prices in the second major
Ode moved upward with the usual fluctuations
until a top ot ST. 10 was reached :or tne week
ending February 16, 1907. The financial de
pression in the latter part oi that year waa ei
rective in driving the average down to 34.31
lor the week ending February 18, 1VU8. when
the cycle waa completed. The npward move
ment in the third major cycle aent tha average
up to 310.88 during tha week ending April 2,
1910. The subsequent reaction culminated dur
ing the week ending May S, 1911. with the
average at $5.69. la the fourth major cycle
the average moved up to $9.40 the week ending
August 15, 1914. This movement poasiblr wa

Further drop in taa pno of Bogs bare far

speaking, Portland is tha high hog market of tha

time past only tha big packers were ia A posi
tion to bring the lower priced Midwest hogs to
the Coast, but recently the smaller packer nude

shown during tha week.
Big Packers Manipulate
Perhaps that is the big reasoa why the big
packers have heretofore rushed te til support
of Portland prices and paid ia isolated instance
much higher values than they were paying for
landing Midwest hogs here. At that time the
amall packer here were at the mercy of the
big fellows. They depended upon the local
supply for their itKTairementa. therefore the
purchase of a load or ao at high values by the
bis Deckers, forced the small fellows to follow
with extreme ficaraa. Naturally this removed
the small fellows so far as competition in the
aellinsr end of the market was concerned. They
wera helpless antil tber decides to oral nogs
from the Midwest themselves. This no soon
er transpired that the big fellows were no longer
rushing , to the support oi local values. roe
drop of $1-25 in the price therefore at North

Cattle Market 8low
Notwithstanding the fact that a very small
volume of cattle sold at an advance of 25 cents
above last week oloatng figures, the North Port
land market in general was not as good as its
general quotation range would indicate. First
of all even with a amaller run than during the
previous week, there was no snap to tha trade
outside of the Monday session which appeared
to be mora ta aid tha livestock show her than
anything else.
Indicating that the market for cattle was Sot
nearly as it pretended to be was the fact that a
shipment of a bunch of Elberta, Canada, cattle
came forward during the week. These were not
sold here because of the extreme low prices ot
tered and were shipped back.

The general public
has come to believe
that only Califor

Washing-ton grov

ciflc slope. Oregon is unheard of ex
cept in spots. This is no fault of Ore
gon fruit distribution, for the distribu
tion is fully as good here as in Califor
nia or in Washington.
The main trouble is raU Oregon grow
ers do not "play up" the name of their
state while California growers capital
ize the name of their state and get away
with it
It has been suggested that the State
Chamber of Commerce or some other
body prepare a uniform label of email
size which shall be pasted upon each
box of fruit that is packed by the big
distributing interests. The suggestion
ays that the label should contain an
outline of the map of the state with the
words, 'Oregon Product," in large let
ters, across the map.
A large percentage of the Oregon pear
crop continues to be placed in cans and
California still gets the credit for grow
lng superior fruit that is shipped from
this state.
By placing the name of the state on
every package of fruit that leaves Ore
gon, the products would receive consid
erable advertising that Is now lost and
a more profitable business could be se
cured in other markets after this label
becomes known to the trade.
It has likewise been suggested that
every sack of potatoes or onions shipped
from the state 'contain the name "Ore
gon" in very large letters.

' Chicken Trad NegltcUd
Whil there was a steady to firm tone for
chickens st the start of Ui week, and in some
instances hifher values were ottered, supplies in
treated so liberally toward the closing that some
arry-overa were reported, ithougn prices were
Lcot changed.
Patau Mark stagnant
Market for potatoes was stagnant during the
week. Uver 30 carload of Taxi mas wera ou the
track here, with buyers hard to discover, even
down to $1.05 1.25 for so-called commercial
run. Truth of the matter ia, that the trade here
kt, and has been for some time, badly contested,
with great plies of junk potatoes from Eastern
v sshington. This has deadened the entire trad
Among some growers ia the local territory there
is more disposition to talk business, but prac
tically all buyers bars withdrawn from th buy
big field, temporarily, at least Even the demand
for seed from Cahioraia interests has subsided for
tha moment
On ton Interest sVainlnf
Interest in th local onion market is again
shewing, after a lsps of about a week. Limited
carload busins is sgain reported by the Confed
rated Onion (Growers' association at $4 per een
tal f. o, b. Willamette vallay points. Of interest
to th trad waa the sal her of carload of
Spanish seed onions from the Yakima territory
Just why the trade here offered snd paid more
for Yakima anions than for the best onions of the
coast offered here is on of those mysteries that
Front street cannot itself explain.
Cauntry Meats Steady
Practically no change waa ahown in th price
of country killed meat In th Front street trade

od hogs were quite liberal, but demand wa
trady and former pncee generally prevailed.
Thia showing waa not indicated by local packer.
